Downtown and the waterfront are a great day tour, you can see the Mayflower replica and Plymouth Rock. Just south of town is Plimouth Plantation, a reenaction of early settler life.
The Cape Cod Canal is just a few miles away, and you've got much of that charm in Plymouth without the hassle of getting over the bridge.
Boston is an easy day trip by bus or commuter rail to South Station, about an hour's ride either mode of transportation.
