Moberly, MO | 1 Review(s)

Born and raised in another small town about 20 miles east of Higbee, MO. Educated in Columbia, Missouri, worked and traveled in the Missouri, Texas, Arkansas and St. Louis area as well. I started working in Higbee last summer and have enjoyed learning its charms and meeting the people. At times I have felt like I was working in a John Grisham novel, Higbee has so much character and potential to offer.

Higbee, MO

Higbee City Lake adds beauty and fun to town! - 2/9/2012
Higbee boasts a lovely and historical lake right off the main route through town. The railroad formed the lake a century ago so that the trains could stop for water, now the lake which is rimmed with water lilies provide a peaceful scene for the town. The City offers fishing permits for a nominal fee at the City Hall down the street. Power boats are not allowed above a small trolling motor, swimming is NOT allowed but birdwatching is and there are plenty of birds and geese to watch. Higbee also retains some interesting architecture in the form of Boxcar House and the many early pre-fabricated houses shipped in by rail and built by the Coal Mining companies to attract miners and their families to the area. There are several nice Victorian Gingerbread houses as well and a quaint downtown area where the old horse trough and hydrant remain. Higbee still has a VFW Post and Post Office, a lovely new Senior Center where hot meals are served daily along with card games and pool tables, craft and health fairs. Higbee schools recently received top ratings. The railroad and coal mines have played out in this area but the moxy and plucky spirit of the people who worked them still shows in their descendants.
Higbee is one of few small towns in Missouri with its own winery and cooperage where oak barrels are made and sold all over. There are many artisans and small business enterprises in the area. Several festivals occur in the temperate months providing residents with a chance to get out and mingle.
