Chesapeake, VA
Chesapeake has Little to Offer -
10/7/2018I was born in Hampton Roads and lived there for more than 65 years. We lived in the city of Chesapeake for three years from 2014-2017. Frankly, we were very glad to finally leave there. There were more minuses than pluses. While the winters are generally mild with little snow, the summers are hot and very humid. Housing prices are high compared to wages, which are relatively low. There is only one Fortune 500 company headquartered in Hampton Roads and very few good employers, beyond federal jobs or hospitals. Chesapeake is largely a suburban community, with many new neighborhoods being built. Unfortunately, city planning is poor and neighborhoods are being built before the roads are improved to accommodate the increased traffic. As a result, traffic is terrible and worsening. Increasingly, the city is putting tolls on roads to pay for construction. Unlike Norfolk or Chesapeake, there are very few good locally owned and operated restaurants. There are very few places to go to enjoy nature. Very few people would consider vacationing in Chesapeake unless they have family there.
