Every time I think about moving, after research I -
12/8/2015I've lived here 10 years and was recently thinking about adding to my small rental portfolio...then I saw an episode of Island Life and Hawaii Life and remembered how much I miss all the greenery of those places and places like Key West and Costa Rica. More research on places I can actually AFFORD to move to (e.g. Panama City, FL) and I find that our weather is just as nice--more sunny days and reasonable highs and lows, population density is much lower (which I like), and the cost of living is better. Plus we have the hot springs year-round, the largest lake in the state, the Rio Grande to float down in the summer, and a few good restaurants to enjoy. I know I don't want to worry about getting a lot of snow, and I really appreciate sunshine. Add to that a bowling alley and movie theater and for a town of under 7K, it's not bad if you aren't looking for a lot of nightlife (which I'm not anymore : ). No place is perfect (As much as I love Key West, it is pretty darn hot and humid in August and the crowds are getting bad a lot of the year.) It's a big retirement community and there is plenty to do during the day...very inexpensive community pool, table tennis tournaments, once a month "Art Hop", and more if you look for it. If you have high income, of course your options are always better, but this isn't a bad little retirement community...and the people are real friendly. Peace out...

12/8/2015I've lived here 10 years now and I think what you call "off" others might call quirky. It's a haven for artists and gays who don't buy in to the uppity Santa Fe mold, AND just today (Dec 8) it was warm enough (with no wind) to take the dog out to Elephant Butte Lake (which remains the largest in the state) and let her enjoy herself off-leash. It can be windy at any time and there are a couple of windier seasons (April/May and Sept/Oct) but it certainly does not blow "steady" and we have many days where it's great to go to the water. The hot springs year-round the year Rio Grande running through it in the summer for floats down the river are quite unique. NO small town is right for everyone; the town on the central coast of Cali I left for here drove some "big city" people nuts with the same lack of nightlife and rolling up of sidewalks at night. I know I would rather live here with the relatively mild weather year-round than live through the short summers and harsh winters of Maine! To each his/her own...

So much safer than Albuquerque! -
10/22/2013Occasional crime sprees (series of break-ins, robberies) interspersed with fairly long periods of quiet. I feel MUCH safe than I would living in Albuquerque and will go out walking at night. VERY quiet after dark around here. The drunken sprees at the what might as well be the only dance hall/pool/bar seem to have slacked off the last couple of years. And not a gang presence that I've heard of, and I think I would have through social media. You do need to watch your speed through the downtown area!
