6/4/2012parentMy child and the students in our neighborhood are doing well at this school. A sizable population of students from this school go into high school magnet programs.
5/8/2012parentMy daughter is a Smitha student and we never had problems with her grades. To us Smitha has done nothing! She's been failing her math and language arts classes since the beggining. We have tried several times to contact the teachers and the principal and to this date no one has gotten back to us. All the kids that I know from that school have something bad to say about this school. I have not seen teachers concern about their students performance and there are no tutoring for student who need help. I will do everything I can to have my daughters not to attend this school. If your kids need help with doing their best, this is not the school for you. No one seems to care or pay attention and they treat the students like high schoolers and forget that parent involvement in the student academic life is very important!!! Teachers are suppose to keep the pinnacle updated for parents and should rely on pinnacle but that even doesn't help! I'm just not happy with this school!!
11/22/2009studentSmitha Middle School has lots of things to do. We have connection and the teachers are very nice. When we are in gym we do sorts stuff like badmintin and more.
10/21/2009parentSmitha is a great school. The teachers are conscientious and extremely helpful. Also there are many enrichment extracurricular activities for students.
10/1/2009otherAlmost 30 students got accepted into the magnet program at Smitha, the teachers there are awesome. They are there to be a supply to students who need a little help. Smitha even placed 4th in the state for reading. This is one of Georgia's Best!
9/9/2009parentDefinetely one of Georgia's better schools. My child has been to about 7 or 8 schools in Georgia and so far this has been the best one.
5/18/2009parentI agree with the last parent. The staff doesn't care about the kids. The school is so busy dishing out Cardinal Cards they don't have time to teach our children. My child has been there for two years and I am hoping to rent a house somewhere else so my child won't have to return to Smitha.
5/4/2009parentPersonal safety emotionally and physically is a problem. Most staff do not seem to be concerned with the issues that children are having and are often ignored when they do try to express their concern about something. This school needs more security. They need a sports program that the kids can get involved in, and they need staff that are going to treat these kids like who they are. They are our future!
3/15/2008studentSmitha is a great school. Vandalism is everywhere not just Smitha. For example Cambell. The stdents don't get into a lot of fights. I've been there for 3 years and there haven't been over 10 fights in 1 school year. The food is somewhat good. The teachers are very helpful and about your future as you go into high school. We have inproved over the years. From an eighth grader now I say that Smitha is the best school I've been to.
2/23/2008studentI am happy my parents withdrew me from this place. Smitha is a horrible school to attend. Just take a look at the bathroom walls, Vandalism has become so common they have removed the soap from the bathroom that is disgusting. The teachers do not give a care for the needs of the studentss and I was failing meserably because of a few teachers. I now amd making all A's and B's in the douglas county area
1/19/2008studentSmitha Middle School is a great school to go to. The teachers are fun, the administrators are nice, and the lunch is okay. The advanced teachers are always looking for new ways to teach us and so are the regular teachers. The after-school programs are fun to attend and they give kids a chance to learn something new and to make new friends. The in-school programs are also fun like art and band. Take the orchestra for example. Mr.Pulley left them but now they are doing great and still having a good time. For me, an 8th grader, going there is fun. Especially after Olympic Week. Smitha allows you to have fun and learn at the same time.

8/7/2007studentI love being a student at Smitha Middle! When i first came to Smitha i was scared i wouldn't make friends, but I made friends immedietly! The only thing that Smitha has problems with is that the students keep getting low grades. My Grades are good, I usually get straight A's, but the students at Smitha don't seem to care much for their grades, I would suggest that the teachers and staff encourage the students to get better grades.
7/9/2007studentI think that Smitha is a great school. But more field trips would be nice (I never went on one at this school except in Orchestra), and please go on with the talent show no matter what. It was done the year before I entered Smitha, but when I entered no one mentioned it.
6/22/2007studentOverall this school is very good, I was part of this school for a year and the time I was there I would say it has showed me a lot in academic with the math teachers Miss. Dean and Mr. Able and music with of course the best Mr. pulley. They have made and excellent job in keeping the school with good discipline and safety. I would recommend this school to every who is looking for an excellent school for their kids.
12/2/2005parentWe took our son out of Smitha and opted to pay out of district tuition as a result of 'Our child's grades being padded'. In addition we found the administration to be disinterested and more consumed in processes, and standardization. We cared to be involved and supportive, however we experienced an attitude of 'this is how we do it and we know what we are doing so let us alone manage the kids'. As Smitha's test scores are compared nationally, they are simply poor. Administration cares to compare the schools standardized test to similar failing schools rather than schools of more elite performance. An example of the padded grades were our son's 'A' average in band, with little effort. However, with his transfer to another school, he is struggling to maintain a 'B' average. Across the board he is challenged now. Also Smitha has no extracurricular sports
10/1/2005studentI am a student of Smitha Middle School so I know first hand of the overall and detailed performance of the school.I have been at Smitha three years and I am an A and B student.I am speaking for the student body when I say that Smitha needs improvment.Students aren't the only ones feeling this way, parents also feels that Smitha has the potential to be better.Academic wise Smitha is pratically perfect but level of parent involment is very low and needs to rise.Music and art has to be taken and will be taken whether the student agrees or not.Sports is a no, Smitha has no sports related activites for their students to participate in.Smiths'a extracurricular activites include:A step team, Science Olympaid, Odyssey of the Mind, Jr. Beta Club,Smitha Broadcasting Company, Yearbook Commity, Academic Bowl, Debate Team, Muliticultural cLub, Envirnmental Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Chess Club, and Film Making CLub.
9/9/2005parentI don't know where you get the stats from but I think you have the make up of the school wrong. The majority of the population seems to be hispanic and ESOL appears to be a real issue. I don't think this administration has their act together at all. My son went to school here several years ago and now my other kids. I don't have a problem at all with personal safety but the teachers who actually are willing to work with the kids are few. It seems like they are so caught up with the at risk kids that any other kid who might need some attention is just allowed to struggle and fail. Their adherance to legally required ADD standards is a joke.
7/20/2005parentOverall, I think Smitha is considered a pretty well-grounded school. But, considereing some problems my child has had with some teachers, I think there are some things to consider. The principal fails to really deal with issues and they are passed to the administrators. I really only know of my child saying she appears at the social functions such as assemblys or on the Smitha news in the morning. She needs to start doing things for the students and quit acting like school is simply social instead of work for her.
5/31/2005former studentSmitha is a generally ok school. But just ok. While some teachers go above and beyond, others don't meet up. If you are looking for a challenging place for your children, the target program would be your only hope. The principle is not a person you can see. She appears for functions, not when you have a problem. Keeping the kids in line is often a problem.
5/30/2005parentOur child just completed sixth grade at Smitha. That our student finished the year on the nonor roll with all A's is no small testament to the teaching staff. Her math teacher and social studies teachers especially used out-of-the box techniques to push the kids' desire to learn. The math teacher had them pick a mathematician of their choosing and had them act out his life and explain why his discovery was important. The social studies teacher had the kids act out different parts of a river to show the importance upstream and downstream. We participated in chorus and the judged performance earned superior marks. Principal Wanda Dukes has done a commendable job with regard to safety, responding personally to requests for information - queries we've seen put off by other administrators. She is a hands-on principal who adds much to the school.
12/1/2004parentWhile I must commend Ms. Dukes for her prompt response to parent/student needs, our biggest concern with this school is emotional and physical safety of the students. We must also commend the teachers for all of their efforts. If not for the daily concern of emotional/physical safety, I believe many of these students would be getting a better education and scoring higher. This is our second year at Smitha and we now wished we had opted to transfer our student to another middle school where he would feel free to learn and not be concerned with personal safety.
8/22/2003parentThis is my third child metriculating through this school and all three girls loved this school and her teachers. The orchestra teacher, Mr. Pulley,is the best and my daughters all enjoyed him tremendously. All three are musicians now because of him. My daughtes love the teachers at this school and I feel that they should get more credit than they do for the hard work they do with our children. I think our school is very good!
