Hampton, VA is a city located near the Hampton Roads harbor and the Chesapeake Bay in southeastern Virginia. As the seventh-largest city in Virginia, Hampton has a long history of politics, culture, and economic growth. The city is home to numerous local organizations and political entities that serve its diverse population. In terms of local politics, Hampton is represented by several elected officials at both state and federal levels. At the state level, Governor Ralph Northam represents Virginia's citizens as part of the Democratic party while Attorney General Mark Herring serves as his chief legal adviser. Additionally, Del. Chris Jones serves as Hampton's representative in the House of Delegates representing the 91st district while Sen. Mamie Locke serves in the Senate representing District 2 of Virginia’s Eastern Region. At a federal level, Rep. Bobby Scott serves as Hampton's representative in Congress representing Virginia’s Third Congressional district and works with Senator Tim Kaine to ensure his constituents’ voices are heard on Capitol Hill. Overall, Hampton has a strong tradition of civic engagement among residents and their respective local political leaders who work together to create positive changes for their community.

Here at BestPlaces, we were looking at the voting patterns since the 2000 election and realized that we could express the results of each election as one letter. R if the Republican Party candidate won, D if the Democratic Party candidate won and I if the Independent Party candidate won. The six elections (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) would be expressed as six-letter word (R R D R R).

Then we went a little further and added the dimension of magnitude. If the difference of victory was greater than 10 percent, the letter is upper case, and lower case if the difference was less than 10 percent. This allows us to see interesting voting patterns at just a glance.

We live in Downtown Hampton within walking distance of the Langley Air and Space Museum, Hampton Carousel, the Hampton History Museum and tons of shops and restraunts.   More
