Salida, California is a small city located in San Joaquin County. Although it is small in size, the politics of this city are quite important to its citizens. The city has a mayor and a four-member City Council that oversee local government operations and decisions. All members of the City Council are elected by public vote every two years and serve four-year terms. The mayor acts as the leader of the council and makes sure all laws passed by the council are enforced. In addition, Salida also has two separate boards that make up its legislative branch: the Planning Commission and the Parks & Recreation Commission. Both commissions regularly meet to discuss topics related to their areas of expertise and report back to City Council with their recommendations. With an engaged citizenry and an active local government, Salida is committed to creating a prosperous future for its citizens.

Here at BestPlaces, we were looking at the voting patterns since the 2000 election and realized that we could express the results of each election as one letter. R if the Republican Party candidate won, D if the Democratic Party candidate won and I if the Independent Party candidate won. The six elections (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) would be expressed as six-letter word (R R D R R).

Then we went a little further and added the dimension of magnitude. If the difference of victory was greater than 10 percent, the letter is upper case, and lower case if the difference was less than 10 percent. This allows us to see interesting voting patterns at just a glance.
