Miami Shores, FL is a small town located in the north of Miami-Dade County. This quaint town has an estimated population of 10,000 people and is governed by a five-member elected city council. The council is tasked with setting policy and enacting ordinances and resolutions to ensure that Miami Shores operates as an efficient and safe municipality. The city council meets publicly on the first and third Tuesday of each month for voting sessions where members discuss issues facing the community. Local elections are held every two years when residents can choose from various candidates who they feel are best suited to represent their interests on the council. There is also a Mayor, who serves as the head of the government, presides over all meetings of the city council, and signs off on any binding documents given final approval by the council. In this way, residents have a direct say in who will govern their town and how it functions.

How It Works:
Here at BestPlaces, we were looking at the voting patterns since the 2000 election and realized that we could express the results of each election as one letter. R if the Republican Party candidate won, D if the Democratic Party candidate won and I if the Independent Party candidate won. The six elections (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) would be expressed as six-letter word (R R D R R).

Then we went a little further and added the dimension of magnitude. If the difference of victory was greater than 10 percent, the letter is upper case, and lower case if the difference was less than 10 percent. This allows us to see interesting voting patterns at just a glance.
