Kealakekua is a small town situated on the Kona coast of Hawaii’s Big Island. While the exact population remains unknown, it is estimated to be just over 2,000 people. The town is served by the Kealakekua-Honaunau Neighborhood Board, which consists of nine elected officials that serve two-year terms. These officials are responsible for making decisions related to community planning and development, parks and recreation, public safety, social services, etc. Every election cycle local political candidates run for positions on the board in order to represent their respective neighborhoods and bring about positive change in the community.
