It is an ethnically and economically diverse community that has long been the home to various labor and civil rights movements, such as the Pullman Strike in 1894, which was led by African American railroad workers. The local government includes a mayor and six aldermen who are elected to serve four-year terms. The mayor and aldermen manage the city's day-to-day operations while working together to provide services such as public safety, transportation infrastructure, public works projects, zoning and land use regulations, and other programs that benefit citizens. In recent years, Calumet City has taken steps to increase citizen involvement in decision-making processes around development projects.
