Cawker, KS is a small city of about 600 people in north-central Kansas. It is governed by a mayor and five council members who are elected to two year terms. The city council meets every month to discuss local matters, such as budgeting, zoning, and infrastructure maintenance. The current mayor is Mark Howard, who was first elected in 2018 and has been re-elected in the 2020 election. Cawker also has its own police force, which works hard to enforce laws and keep citizens safe. Over the years, Cawker has had a few political issues come up within the community that have been addressed by the mayor and council members. Most recently there was a debate over increasing taxes for public services such as road repair and trash removal. After several public hearings, it was decided that taxes should remain at their current level while other sources of funding were explored to pay for these services.
