Quincy, MA is a vibrant city with a rich political history. The city has had an active role in Massachusetts politics since the late 17th century and continues to be a major player in state-wide issues today. The government of Quincy is composed of a mayor and twelve city councilors who are elected every two years to serve in the legislative branch. These elected officials discuss and vote on local ordinances, public works projects, budgets, zoning regulations and other matters that affect the lives of Quincy residents. The current mayor is Thomas Koch who is running for reelection this year. The City Council also consists of several members from both major political parties as well as independent candidates that strive to keep the city running efficiently. As a result, there is often lively debate around important issues facing the town such as housing and infrastructure development, economic development initiatives, public safety initiatives, and social services programs. All these efforts are meant to ensure that Quincy remains a safe and prosperous place for its citizens.

Here at BestPlaces, we were looking at the voting patterns since the 2000 election and realized that we could express the results of each election as one letter. R if the Republican Party candidate won, D if the Democratic Party candidate won and I if the Independent Party candidate won. The six elections (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) would be expressed as six-letter word (R R D R R).

Then we went a little further and added the dimension of magnitude. If the difference of victory was greater than 10 percent, the letter is upper case, and lower case if the difference was less than 10 percent. This allows us to see interesting voting patterns at just a glance.
