Land, MN is a small town located in the Midwest region of the United States. It is home to approximately 5,000 citizens who take part in local politics and use their voice to effect change. Every two years the town holds elections for Mayor, Town Council members and State Representatives. The Mayor serves as the head of Land’s government while Town Council members are elected to represent the interests of each district within the town. Local candidates are nominated by residents of Land and must campaign in order to gain support and get elected. These campaigns focus on issues that are important to the citizens such as public safety, economic development, education and healthcare. Each year there is an election season when these candidates meet with voters in public forums or participate in debates regarding local issues. After all votes are cast, citizens come together to celebrate new leaders and commit themselves to continuing their civic involvement throughout the term of office.

Here at BestPlaces, we were looking at the voting patterns since the 2000 election and realized that we could express the results of each election as one letter. R if the Republican Party candidate won, D if the Democratic Party candidate won and I if the Independent Party candidate won. The six elections (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) would be expressed as six-letter word (R R D R R).

Then we went a little further and added the dimension of magnitude. If the difference of victory was greater than 10 percent, the letter is upper case, and lower case if the difference was less than 10 percent. This allows us to see interesting voting patterns at just a glance.
