Kirkwood, MO is a small city located in Saint Louis County just west of the St. Louis city limits. It has long been considered one of the most affluent suburbs in the region and is known as one of St. Louis' earliest commuter towns. As such, Kirkwood's politics are heavily influenced by both Saint Louis County and State officials, as well as local representatives. In recent years, the City Council has gained additional power to make independent decisions on important policy matters such as development and infrastructure projects. The Mayor is an elected official who serves a four-year term and often works closely with state and county representatives to ensure Kirkwood's needs are being met. Local elections occur every two years for City Council members, during which voters select from a slate of candidates running on various platforms for office. Here at BestPlaces, we were looking at the voting patterns since the 2000 election and realized that we could express the results of each election as one letter. R if the Republican Party candidate won, D if the Democratic Party candidate won and I if the Independent Party candidate won.
