Washington Township is a township in Gloucester County, New Jersey. The local politics of the area are divided between the two major parties – Republican and Democrat – with both sides working together to make sure that the interests of the community continue to be well represented. The Township Committee serves as the governing body and consists of five members who are elected at-large in partisan elections held every four years. It is responsible for enacting laws, making policy, budgeting and providing infrastructure services to its residents. In addition, Washington Township holds several different boards and commissions which help influence decisions that affect the residents such as planning boards, zoning boards and environmental commission. It also has a mayor who works closely with these committees to ensure positive progress in the community. With a strong local government presence, Washington Township strives to provide efficient services that make life easier for its citizens.

Here at BestPlaces, we were looking at the voting patterns since the 2000 election and realized that we could express the results of each election as one letter. R if the Republican Party candidate won, D if the Democratic Party candidate won and I if the Independent Party candidate won. The six elections (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) would be expressed as six-letter word (R R D R R).

Then we went a little further and added the dimension of magnitude. If the difference of victory was greater than 10 percent, the letter is upper case, and lower case if the difference was less than 10 percent. This allows us to see interesting voting patterns at just a glance.
