West Seneca, New York is a small town outside of Buffalo that is known for its strong sense of community and involvement. An interesting aspect of the politics in West Seneca is the way in which local citizens take part in the governing process. The Town Board consists of six elected officials including a Supervisor, Town Clerk, four Council members and a Highway Superintendent. All of these positions are filled through popular elections where residents can come out to vote for the candidate that best represents their interests. Additionally, there are several committees and boards that have been set up by the Town Board to help make sure all citizens’ voices are heard. These include advisory boards such as the Conservation Advisory Board and Planning Board that give input on important issues facing West Seneca. With such an engaged population, West Seneca is a great example of how local politics can be effective in promoting civic engagement.

Here at BestPlaces, we were looking at the voting patterns since the 2000 election and realized that we could express the results of each election as one letter. R if the Republican Party candidate won, D if the Democratic Party candidate won and I if the Independent Party candidate won. The six elections (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) would be expressed as six-letter word (R R D R R).

Then we went a little further and added the dimension of magnitude. If the difference of victory was greater than 10 percent, the letter is upper case, and lower case if the difference was less than 10 percent. This allows us to see interesting voting patterns at just a glance.
