Hopewell Township is situated in Mercer County, New Jersey and is known for its diverse political landscape. The township is governed by an elected Mayor and a five-member Board of Township Committee. The Mayor and four members of the Board of Township Committee are elected to staggered terms in office every two years. Each year, one member of the Board serves as Deputy Mayor who presides over meetings when the Mayor is absent or indisposed. At present, the Democratic Party holds a majority on the board with four out of five committee members being Democrats. Throughout its history, Hopewell Township has seen various candidates from both major parties running for local offices and other elections are typically very competitive.
