The city has an estimated population of 10,071 people according to the 2010 census and spans 3.6 square miles. It is bordered by Arnold, Lower Burrell, and Washington Townships. The city is governed by a Mayor-Council system. The Mayor serves as the chief executive officer of the city while the City Council serves as the legislative body. They are responsible for enacting ordinances and resolutions necessary to carry out the provisions of the City Charter and laws of Pennsylvania. Education within New Kensington includes four elementary schools, two middle schools, and Valley Senior High School which is part of the Valley School District. Residents can take advantage of other recreational activities that are hosted throughout New Kensington such as local festivals, parades, and sports leagues. Although there are no local political candidates to mention specifically, it is clear that New Kensington has a strong sense of community spirit that helps keep its citizens engaged in their civic duties.
