Jay, VT is a small town in the Green Mountains of Vermont. It is primarily populated by families who have been living there for generations, and has strong ties to the rich agricultural heritage of the region. The town government of Jay is made up of a three-member Board of Selectmen, elected by ballot once every two years, and a Town Clerk, who is appointed by the Board. The Selectmen are responsible for managing the town's finances and setting policy for public safety, planning and zoning, public works, recreation and parks, health regulations, tax assessments and other municipal functions. Every two years local political candidates stand for election to serve as selectman on the Jay Town Board. Candidates must be registered voters in Jay and are typically active members of their community with a desire to serve their neighbors. The selection process includes campaigning actively in order to get out their message about why they should be voted into office. In recent years there has been more civic participation in Jay than ever before as citizens seek ways to make improvements in their community.
