Lawrence County, AL is a rural county with a population of just over 34,000 people. It has a long history of politics that dates back to its founding in 1818. The county is represented by five commissioners who are all elected to serve four-year terms. All five commissioners are part of the Republican Party and it is currently chaired by Commissioner Tom Godsey. There are also several local offices such as the Sheriff, Clerk, Tax Assessor/Collector, District Attorney, and Coroner that are all filled by elections as well. Lawrence County also participates in presidential elections every four years and has traditionally voted red for many decades.
