McDuffie County is located in the east-central region of Georgia and has a total area of 229 square miles. The county seat is Thomson, and the county's population was 21,875 according to the 2010 U.S. Census. McDuffie County has been an important area for politics over the years due to its location between Augusta and Atlanta, two major population centers in Georgia. The county is part of the 10th District represented by Republican Jody Hice in the US House of Representatives and is part of Georgia’s 23rd State Senate District represented by Senator Lee Anderson. On the county level, Democrats Tanya Thornton and Fred Curtis Jr currently serve as McDuffie County Commissioners chairperson and vice-chairman respectively; they are joined by fellow Democrat Allen Brown on the Board of Commissioners. Local political issues mainly focus on economic development, education funding and agricultural interests.
