Steuben County, NY is a largely rural county located in the Southern Tier of New York State. As such, it does not have many political figures at either the local or state level. However, the county does offer local politics for those who wish to get involved and make their voices heard. The Board of Supervisors is the primary governing body for Steuben County and consists of nine members elected from single-member districts throughout the county. In addition to the Board of Supervisors, there are several Town Councils as well as a number of special district boards that serve specific areas within Steuben County. All these boards have representatives that are elected by voters in local elections and consist mostly of citizens with an interest in their community’s affairs. There are also several committees which provide valuable services to Steuben County residents such as floodplain management, emergency response planning, land use development planning, and public health initiatives. This system allows citizens to become involved in their local government and really make a difference in how things are run in Steuben County.

Here at BestPlaces, we were looking at the voting patterns since the 2000 election and realized that we could express the results of each election as one letter. R if the Republican Party candidate won, D for the Democrat and I for the Independent. The six elections (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) would be expressed as six-letter word (R R D R R).

Then we went a little further and added the dimension of magnitude. If the difference of victory was greater than 10 percent, the letter is upper case, and lower case if the difference was less than 10 percent. This allows us to see interesting voting patterns at just a glance.
