Stockton, KS is a small rural town located in Rooks County, Kansas. It has a population of only 821 people according to the most recent census. While the town is too small to have its own mayor or city council, it is part of the larger Rooks County political system. The county seat is located in nearby Plainville, and the current county commissioner is Danny Bixby. He was preceded by longtime commissioner Jack Durham who held his office for eighteen years until his retirement in 2020. The two-seat county commission consists of a chairman and vice-chairman that are elected every four years by the citizens of Stockton and all of Rooks County. The other local offices such as sheriff, district attorney, and clerk are filled through appointment with approval from the state legislature. Although Stockton may be small, its citizens take pride in their ability to elect officials who will represent their interests on a larger scale.
