Shelter Island, NY is a small Town located on an Island in the East End of Long Island. The population of 11964 Shelter Island is 2,194 people as of 2019. Shelter Island is divided into four hamlets; Dering Harbor, Silver Beach, Ram Island and Shelter Island Heights. In this small Town, local politics are conducted on the basis of a Town Council-Manager form of government. The town council consists of five members elected to two-year terms by the residents in each respective hamlet. The citizens also elect a town supervisor who serves a four-year term and acts as the Chief Executive Officer for the town. Through these elected officials, residents have influence over major decisions regarding budgeting, taxes, public policy and local law enforcement.
