It consists of seven council members who are elected by residents of the town to two-year terms. The Town Council oversees various functions such as budgeting, zoning ordinances, and parks and recreation programs. At the state level, Friday Harbor is represented by Senator Kevin Ranker in Olympia representing District 40, which includes all San Juan County and parts of Whatcom County. In addition to Senator Ranker's office in Olympia, he has offices in both Friday Harbor and Anacortes to serve constituents from both counties.
