Lack of Integrity Doom this Town - 5/4/2018
If you have completed higher education and need a good paying job, keep looking for a place to live. You will not be happy there.

Additionally, the data on Dowagiac from this website speaks for itself. Not good. I agree with the conclusions one can make from the data. I can further provide anecdotal evidence.

High Property Crime - Yes, plenty. People just do not respect the town and assets. The blight problem reinforces these attitudes. I've had windows shot out in my cars, and damage done to property. Property would get destroyed at local businesses as well. Police were not useful in town.

High Violent Crime - Yes, seen people get into fist fights at 3am outside my home. Meth is a problem, thus enforces violent crime.

No landlord oversight from the city. No laws put into to place to protect tenants, so many under served individuals were prayed upon by land lords (some that held public office positions at one point). When City Read More

Cronyism at it's best to keep a community down - 1/29/2018
Beware of this community. The mayor has held office for over 30 years and has no intentions of letting go of the title along with the city council. As a resident of SWMI and a home owner in the area I will warn you that there are a half dozen other communities in the area that are more progressive, featuring a better economic outlook than Dowagiac.
Honestly, if your evaluating this town as somewhere to live beware: No mufflers on 1/2 the populations cars, roving bands of children with no parental supervision, 35 minutes to any major highway, and severe blight issues.
The pro's of this area: super affordable. I can't think of any Read More

Moved back after 35 years - 4/26/2010
I'm originally from Dowagiac but left in the late 70's. Been back a time or two and finally 5 yrs. ago moved back. I love Dowagiac. You have 4 distinct seasons, fishing, hunting, camping, Lake Michigan, festivals in surrounding areas for most of the year, and many other things to see and do. The only problem I see with our wonderful town is there are no jobs! If we could get a couple factories to move here, it would be so much better. The economy hit us pretty hard here but hopefully with time we can build our town back to the thriving place it once was. Good place to raise a family.Read More

Raised in Dowagiac - 12/25/2008
I was raised as a child in Dowagiac and nearby areas. I think Dowagiac is a nice town. There are many great things that it has to offer, especially when it comes to the outdoors. Unfortunately Dowagiac, just as most cities in MI, is suffering from economical problems. I left the town when I was 21, and have been gone 8 years. I think all the time about moving back now that I have a family, but I am afraid to make the big move with the unemployment so high in the area. I didn't really appreciate what a great little town it is until I left and saw how things are in other Read More

Life in Dowagiac October 2008 - 10/10/2008
Dowagiac is small town, with a small town atmosphere. I have not lived here my whole life nor did I grow up here, but it is an okay town to raise children. Alot of country and space. The economy is in a crisis right now, the unemployment rate is high, but this is all over Michigan. The manufacturing and industrial jobs seem to be closing up left and right. But for small town business owners its not a bad place, the city council is looking to bring other industry to the city to increase growth, and quality of life. There are a few new companies moving to town, plus there are a number of surrounding area companies to work.Dowagiac is centrally located around some major cities such as Chicago, Kalamazoo, and South Bend/Mishawaka. If you want a small town life with a big time job and dont mind the commute its a great place. The many... many... lakes are beautiful and fun in the summer and attract alot of Chicago tourists. If you like ATV's, dirtbikes, snowmobiles, demolition derby's, Read More
