Review of Franklin, North Carolina

You Either Hate or Love Franklin, NC
Star Rating - 5/31/2010
Franklin is a remote small mountain community located at the far western end of the state just 20 minutes north of the Georgia border. If you are an avid church going Baptist, like a small community, are retired on a fixed income and like to watch the grass grow you will love Franklin. If you are single, need to work, are educated and enjoy cultural events you will hate Franklin. If, God-forbid, you are a Yankee or from Florida, think twice about ever finding work here because they will tell you that they only hire locals here. If you love hiking and mountains, you have found your heaven here. If you love all the conveniences that a city offers, you will not like it here. You will find you will be driving to Asheville every weekend that is a 1.5 hour drive over the mountains. If you enjoy shopping at Wal-mart, Dollar General and thrift stores and your taste in food are for biscuits and gravy, pork products and fast food you will love Franklin. As a Yankee from upstate New York, the only good thing I find about Franklin is the weather. It is never too hot or too cold here and there are lots of sunny days. I love the many warm winter days and wonderful walking trails around town called the Greenway. Thanks to the mountains, the summer heat clears out overnight so you never really have any stiffling heat here. Just make sure you fit into this town before you quit a good job and go through the expense of moving here. I have met many people who thought they were going to love it here only to leave Franklin within six months.

Thank you very much for your honest evaluation of the town of Franklin, N.C. I moved here to Charlotte, N.C. from New England some eight years ago now, and I don't really care for it here, but it isn't that bad either. I had far more devoted believers at home, (Up North) than you will ever find here in the supposed "Bible Belt." It's baloney. Charlotte is so highly and over taxed, backwards, they don't give a hoot about the public at all. I just finally found p.t. employment with a good company, after being discriminated over and over, b/c I am from the North, and I am white, and educated. The illiteracy is very high here, and the only people who are given employment are illiterate, uneducated young people! It is a beautiful area, and the climate is above a 10 score. I do much better in a warmer climate, but the discriminating attitudes is a big hurdle to get past. There are many, many New Yorker's here. You might want to try it here, But beware of high taxes. The unemployment problem is country wide, so I don't fault any state for that. You might find a decent location here in Charlotte, like the town of Matthews, and find other fellow New Yorker's in your neighborhood.
