I'm from New Hampshire my son just decided to attend NC State over Northeastern and other New England schools. I was initially a little concerned that my son might have a harder time making friends because he is a "Yankee". However, at an accepted students tour, I mentioned to another parent, from NC, that my son would not be able to travel home often. Later in that day she sought me out to say "your son will stay at our house for holidays" even though she had met just me hours earlier. He also did some activities with other perspective students, mostly from NC, and he said he felt at home. Another parent from NC initially said that there are cultural difference, but after we had lunch together, it was apparent the we both had the same interests/goals - get our kids a good education and find a way to pay for it. I think that most unfriendliness is just an outdated perception.
