Chicago vs Pittsburgh vs Boston
Star Rating - 8/31/2014
My wife and I are trying to choose the best city to live out of Chicago vs Pittsburgh vs Boston. We like European-style cities and urban life very much. We would love to be able to go about our daily life without needing a car. What can you guys tell us about the following topics:

- Walkability
- Public Transportation
- Crime (for us it’s of upmost importance to find a safe zone free of murders, guns, school shootings and drugs)
- Family friendliness
- Friendliness of its inhabitants
- Educated and cultured people
- Gentrification of the city
- Political moderation (the less polarized the better)
- Good schools
- Diversity (the more diverse the better)
- Cost of living
- Cultural scene (art, jazz music, classical music, pop music, theater, musicals, dance performances, restaurants, stand-up comedy, zoo, children’s museums)
- Parks and green areas
- Possibility of day and/or weekend trips (to other cities, hiking spots, etc)

Can you guys recommend good neighborhoods within those cities? We prefer it to suburban life.

NOTE: We know NYC and D.C. meet all those items, on the most part, but both are far from affordable for an immigrant family ?

Chicago: ease without a car depends on neighborhood. ie: It's difficult to live on the blue line and get to a red line neighborhood. Getting to the loop from most neighborhoods is easy enough. Getting anywhere from the north side to the south side is ridiculous. Cost of living is high. Everything costs -- things that may be free or next to nothing elsewhere, except for other cities. And of course, rent is high, taxes are high... It is possible to live in a relatively "safe" neighborhood, but nowhere is more than a mile from where there has been recent activity. Schools vary by neighborhood, but overall the system struggles. Several private schools to choose from. The city votes primarily democrat, but as to whether the politicians are true democrats is up for debate. The theatre scene is great, unique and thriving. Lots of museums (but they're expensive). Lots of great restaurants. Some areas are green with newly renovated play areas for children, mostly north and northwest neighborhoods. The lakefront is pretty. Nice neighborhoods for families: Roscoe Village, North Center, Lincoln Square, Ravenswood, Andersonville
