Review of Tyler, Texas

Super conservative and nothing to do
Star Rating - 3/27/2007
There is not a whole lot to do in Tyler, and it is VERY conservative. We've lived here almost two years and can't wait to leave. We are 30 years old (with no children)and bored out of our minds. Not to mention, we feel like we live in a retirement community. The only things we have found to do are either go out to eat (at mostly chain restaurants or fast food) or go to the movies...that's about it. No good museums, nightlife, shopping, eclectic restaurants, etc. - for these things we drive to Dallas (2 hours away).
On the positive side...in the spring there are beautiful azaleas and dogwoods in bloom and you can buy a dozen roses for $2 from roadside stands almost year round. There is also a berry farm where you can buy fresh blueberries in the summer (yum!). Tyler is located about 45 minutes from Canton, where there is an awesome flea market the weekend before the first Monday of every month.
But even with these few positives, unless you are of retirement age (or maybe looking to raise a family in a super conservative place)...I'd look somewhere else.

Who moves to a small town and expects great museums and a nightlife? Seriously! That's like moving to San Francisco and wondering why there are so few Mormons and cowboys. Ridiculous! I keep reading reviews complaining about places where there is nothing to do. Folks, here is a secret: if you need to go to a different museum exhibit or hear a new band or eat at some new restaurant every single day in order to be happy, then you need to move to NY or to LA! It's that simple! I myself was raised in a small Texas town and never wanted for things to do. I had my friends. We could hunt, fish, go driving around, go walking down the tracks, get together and play card games, play video games, visit each others' houses and grill, play basketball, pop fireworks, go to the movies, rent movies, listen to music together, tell jokes, grab a bite at a restaurant, go to the park, go swimming, play Frisbee, play with the dogs and cats, sit out on the porch and talk to neighbors, watch football, play football, go to church, ride bikes, and a whole bunch of other things. Gee whiz, some people don't know how to entertain themselves. And by the way, I had an aunt who lived in Tyler for many years. It's a nice town. I'd rather live there than Dallas.

It is now 9 yrs later than this post, and looks like things have changed in Tyler. In researching to retire there, I've noticed a lot of shopping is available there, now. Almost everything I could want: Sam's Club, Target w/food center, Macys, Pier One, thrift & consignment shops, WalMart Supercenters, other dept stores, you name it. Notice to all: I am NOT conservative, so if I move there, I will be what most Americans are: a bit left of center, and tolerant. I suspect there are others in Tyler who don't advertise that they are not conservative. Tyler is now a retirement city, I understand, and a lot of Dallas retirees move there. Dallas is not primarily conservative. So although in the minority, there are now bound to be some non-conservatives there. And plenty of shopping, now.
