Review of Kalamazoo, Michigan

Hi,

My husband and I are considering relocating to the Kalamazoo area for his job and I'm just starting to do some research. We have elementary-aged children so good schools are our first priority when it comes to choosing a neighborhood. We would prefer public schools that are walking distance from the neighborhood. We would consider outlying towns or suburbs of Kalamazoo.

Thanks!

Public schools are important if you want to take advantage of the Kalamazoo Promise that grants free tuition at all public colleges in Michigan plus Kalamazoo College (a private four-year college). I believe you need to live within the city limits to qualify. When I moved here in 1973 (from Florida) Kalamazoo was a food desert but now there are many ethnic restaurants and more choices. It is much less white-seeming than it used to be and has more educated people of color (and a more educated white population I think) than when I came. I have grown MORE pleased with Kalamazoo rather than less since 1973
