Review of Detroit, Michigan

Crime Rate
Star Rating - 1/16/2011
I was born in the city of Detroit in Michigan. I was raised in the city as well, went to school there and everything. Growing up there was fun. Belle Isle and other Metro Parks were the thing to do with your family on the weekends and during the summer breaks. I moved from Detroit to Flint in 2004 and the crime rate there is pretty high. I lived there for 2 years and hated it. So, I have been away from the city for a few years and never plan to go back. The crime rate is really high there and it makes me sad. I get a sinking, depressing feeling when I ride through the city. It's gray and gloomy. There is a lot of graffiti and plenty of burned down homes and businesses and abandoned buildings that has been just sitting there since, I was a child. I am 32 years old now. It's like, nothing is ever fixed on or torn down. Many things are forgotten about there. Another major issue is the abandoned houses that sit for years and years. Young girls and women have been violated and raped inside the abandoned homes, and yet, they still stand inside MANY neighborhoods in Detroit. Many of the crimes committed there is by relatively young persons. The school systems in Detroit features some of the best but, almost half of the schools have been closed down due to mismanagement of school funds and the Mayor of Detroit scheme. In 2010, there were suppose to be 50 more schools to be closed on the list. Crime inside the schools are prominent but, not astronomical. If one is looking to go to Detroit to live, especially with children, I would consider another city. Grand Rapids, Flint, Inkster and Highland Park(not up north), and a few other cities up northern Michigan are other not-so-safe cities. There are MANY cities inside Michigan that are great, though.
