Review of Jasper, Georgia

Thoughts on Jasper
Star Rating - 6/23/2014
We moved here from central coast California about 6 years ago, for family reasons. I have a love hate deal going with Jasper. Some years no snow, last year we got snowed in for 5 days with two heavy snow and ice storms. Every year the weather is different, so you can't count on anything---I'm an avid gardener, so it's frustrating. Biting flies, mosquitoes, chiggers you name it, there are bugs here and some of them quite large!! Gorgeous birds, frustrating squirrels, tons of turkeys, deer and wildlife with an occassional bear. The weather is only nice in spring and summer. Spring bringing torrential downpours that knock over all the blooms and tomato plants. I mean it dummps to where I have to almost pull over. Summer is very humid, but better than south of us. Gorgeous dogwood blooms and beautiful fall color. A few nice festivals in fall. A short season farmer's market that's OK. A whole lot of Republican churchy people that unfortunately have to mention Jesus when you're checking out at the stores!! Way too many dumpy, and I mean dumpy houses and trailer lining the roads. Beer boxes and bottles thrown all over our beautiful road on the weekends from all the rednecks. Schools are great, hospital and doctors are great. Housing not bad, especially compared to CA. Downtown could be cute, but there's nothing there. Several good restaurants and BBQ places. Huge waterpark coming in a few years just up the road, which will change this place forever. Traffic can get bad on 515 certain times of the day. Not much to do around here especially for the teens and young people. Atlanta an hour away and several cute town 20 minutes away. Several huge golf resorts, but alot of the people have to tell you where they live------what that means I don't know. Like I said, it's a love/hate thing. We do have a Walmart now, but that's a love/hate thing as well. There is still a lot of poverty here as well as the super rich moving in, so it's unsettled. Seems to be a well seen sheriff and police force. Education is highly hoped for here and the schools keep on top of things with constant phone calls. I guess my biggest problem with Jasper is the weather and poverty. Don't let people stack crap so high, you can't see their houses!!
