Review of Decatur, Alabama

Decatur is Decatur
Star Rating - 6/25/2019
I moved to Decatur from Huntsville a little over a year ago. I'm just not a big fan for a few reasons. #1 Brownsferry Nuclear Power Plant is exactly 10.43 miles from my home and I am downwind. Most of Decatur is downwind, unfortunately. The air quality here is already terrible due to all the manufacturing. Together it all adds up to one of the highest cancer rates in the country. #2 reason I'm not a big fan, water quality is horrendous. Absolutely horrendous. Everything will rust , but the rust and lead in water is only the tip of the iceberg. Put it this way, it's impossible to fix. Redstone Arsenal was a chemical munitions facility back in the day. Produced more chlorine? Gas in one day( during WW2 ) than was used during all of the Great War. Decatur is just downriver. Lord knows nothing was ever dumped in the river... Oh wait, it's so bad, they had to warn the people not to eat the fish. It's well understood that the government wasn't concerned of potential problems caused by their pollution. If that wasn't enough, companies like 3m said f#*% it and dumped away also. So, the air and water are bad and that's enough for me to want to get away. When you add in some of the other little things... Southern hospitality seems to miss a little something here. Don't get me wrong, if you can accept the air and water and sub par schools, and other b.s. Decatur is Decatur. There are definitely worse places. Avoid Moulton, they have one of the most corrupt police forces in the state. They make the law up as they go, in Moulton, and are really good at telling stories. If you have children, keep them out of Moulton, keep them clear of Trinity. Police there are above the law and that's extremely scary. Good news, except for a few, the officers in Decatur are very fair, level headed and grounded. I moved here under the impression that were something different. Other than the patrol officer that wrenched my elbow outta socket while detaining me (for my own protection) at my home over a misunderstanding, I applaud the Decatur PD patrol. There is a lot of upside to Decatur but nothing trumps the bad air and water to me, so that's why I marked 3/5 stars
