Living in Holyoke

Holyoke is bad only in downtown and in the public projects. As every city or town, there are good and bad areas with gangs and no gangs. And even then, we've had have only had 2 homicides this year and we are in August. I live in the suburbs and it is beautiful, quiet with beautiful houses and surroundings, kid friendly neighborhoods, places to hike, bike... You can land a good job with good pay depending on your education. Many young people I know around here continued their education and they are young nurses, teachers, dentists, etc. Most of them worked and went to school at the same time. So I don't understand the description of "CHISA". Maybe she/he got stuck in the projects living off the system in the worst neighborhoods (that may not be the case). What I know is that Holyoke is still a good place to live with many good neighborhoods and programs to help those in need.

What neighborhoods are, for lack of a better word, safe: near the canals, the St Jerome and Forestdale Cemetery, Highland Park, Main Street along the river? There seem to be some beautiful homes in these areas but I'm getting a little old to live somewhere where I might be afraid to walk from my car to the front stoop, or take a walk in the evening.

Hi Merli, we may be moving around the Holyoke area due to a possible gov't job. I don't like seeing those negative comments (down below). I'm originally from the Cape and have been away from MA for 30+ yrs. Irealized things have changed. My husband is from the country and would like to have a mini farm, with souople of cows, chickens, and a vegetable garden, etc... What's the crime statisitcs like now? I don't want someone's opinion based on their bad experience but would like the facts. Where can I get this? Any suggestions for a good rural setting around Holyoke? Thanks!
