| 9/13/2012 | parent | to the parent that wrote in on Feb 16, 2011...try grammar classes prior to bashing the teachers and school |
| 10/26/2011 | parent | Bad school. Dont waste you time. The school board want even follow up on the complaints. Dont even take you dogs there :( Help.................................. |
| 10/18/2011 | parent | I had my child at a local private school before transferring him to South Dade Senior. The rigor in academics is superb and my child is flourishing taking AP classes. I love South Dade Senior |
| 6/7/2011 | parent | My child has done excellent in the AP Courses. The teachers are very helpful, return my calls, go the extra mile in assuring that students get the help they need to understand the course and pass. Their VPA Dance Program is the best, they put on a great show and the director and teacher are wonderful. Parent involvement and support is very important and it works hand in hand, I get involved as much as possible. This school has come a long way, I applaud them and hats off to the principal. |
| 2/16/2011 | parent | This school is a joke. none of the teachers never return phone calls(even after I left msgs), I called the school after no returned phone calls (a week and 2 days) and I was put on hold for 20 mins with out no one coming back on and tell me if any one helped me or not. I did get one phone in Spanish but who ever left me the msg didnt leave a name or where to call back they only left the name of the school and said call back. Now that is a SMART TEACHER.... yea right. I even spoke to the principal she tells me I will find out and call you back. She took my name but no phone number.. I am still wondering how this principal will call me back. This school needs help big time.... |
| 10/29/2010 | parent | This school is poorly run and disorganized. It takes many trips to the school to get anything done. The best way you get response to anything is to send an email or make an appointment. My daughter spent one semester there and loathed it. She indicated there were fights at the school on a regular basis. There are some good teachers and counselors but overall the academic quality at the school is very poor. Her AP classes were a joke. They were not taught at that level. |
| 9/17/2009 | parent | My son is special needs and is in the Project Victory program which is a great program. Also his teacher last year is very special, Ms Mark. |
| 9/16/2009 | student | Some of our teachers are awesome and I can really learn from them =] We have a four by four schedule and I think I'm getting my credits faster, an hour and a half is the perfect time. It's just pretty cool. |
| 9/3/2009 | student | south dade senior high is great. no doubt. very good academies and great techers. very good school. im currently a junior |
| 8/13/2009 | student | I went to this school for my freshman year. I can honestly say I hated it. I'm in the IB program & the IB program in this school is very poor. I didn't learn anything at all throughout the whole school year. The teacher's didn't teach at all & just gave us work without ever teaching anything. The kids in the IB program are secluded from the rest of the people and it's really bad. I'm a very social person & I like meeting other people but when you're in IB you have the same people for every class. It's so boring. |
| 10/20/2008 | parent | As with all schools, it's up to parents to make sure your child is getting the education they deserve. Every school has problems so this one is no different. Motivated students and parents can make a difference. Student atheletes isn't an oxymoron. Winning really isn't everything or the only thing. Coaches, parents and the administration are responsible to not just keep kids eligible but to make them just as competitive in the classroom. Mr. Alvin L. McCray |
| 10/19/2008 | parent | I understand this school is on it's way to become a magnet school and has recently moved into a brand new state of the art building right next door. I saw it, It's just awesome. A change the students can really appreciate. A beautiful auditorium and outside campus. Mrs. E. Ruiz Homestead |
| 8/12/2008 | parent | I had 2 children go through this school. It was extremely difficult sending them there knowing about all the problems. They did okay because of their personalites, I have another that Is NOT going ther becaue of the additional and worsening problems that were not there when my other 2 went or have gotten worse. I would highly recomment that you spend the money for a private school or get you kind in a magnet school. |
| 1/18/2008 | teacher | Having taught in many different schools over the past 40 years, I came to SDHS in 1980 and call it my home school today. Having toured the New building (largest built in Miami Dade County), and having participated in two recent faculty 'retreats' where new visions are taking us much higher, and being 4 years from retirement, I think the staff, students and families that really apply themselves and are willing to work together will find the SDHS experience quite incredible! |
| 1/22/2007 | former student | Its all about the students motivation. Just like it is with any other school. I had great teachers out at south dade. Some of the students maturity levels are low... |
| 11/30/2004 | parent | My daughter is a freshman at South Dade Senior. Though, she is excited about attending school, I am concerned about social conflicts she has witnessed. She is bothered by the volume of bickering, and gossipping among the students. I don't think this affects her school performance, but she is withdrawn and do not have many friends for fear of becoming a part of the foolishness. I don't think the school can do too much to reduce most of these conflicts. However, I trust there are provisions made to avoid any serious battles. I am very pleased with the education provided at South Dade. |
| 4/30/2004 | parent | Maybe I have been spoiled by private schools in the past, but it would be nice if the parents had more access (email or something) as well as a better system to get info from the school ie. grades, events, etc. |
| 4/25/2004 | parent | This school has people with many experience, but seem to lack teachers that want to teach students and plus students are under too much influence with the FCAT(Florida Comprehensive Aplitude Test) and teachers don't understand how to teach students how to pass this test. Also, this school has no money to buy any new books in which why it's a 'd' school. They don't new books to keep up with the subject. I'll rate this school a 4 from a scale of 1-100. I recommend that you try to go Coral Reef Senior if you want all the important information. If you think I'm lying, ask Mr. Morales for proof! |
| 1/9/2004 | parent | At So. Dade a big problem my child is having is feeling pressured to 'learn' a teacher's bias and not be allowed to voice an opinion different from the popular opinion without criticism and sometimes all out mockery of his/her views. Keeping from being 'in the wrong place at the wrong time' and ending up in trouble is a problem. There is much disrespect paid to the students by staff members as too many adults treat the kids the way the kids treat them. Parents need to communicate with teachers frequently to monitor their child's education. |
| 1/9/2004 | parent | The school atmosphere lacks motivation. Is no wonder they have a low college grad. turnout. I try to motivate my children everyday about school and even try to meet with teachers to find out what exactly is the curriculum. If I don't feel it's motivating enough I try to get the class change to a more challenging one. Some of the teachers are substandard. |
| 1/7/2004 | parent | When I moved from Georgia to Florida I never thought my daughter would excel as much as she has. Your school has given her the opportunity to grow and the encouragement give to the students in your school is commandable. I give you all an A+ or 4.5 average.. You are above the rest.. Keep up the great work you give our kids in these times.. They need all the help we can give them. Thank you! |
| 8/19/2003 | parent | When we moved from N.J. to Homestead, Fl... I realized how I have always taken for granted the quality of education offered in the N.J. schools. The complete lack of enthusiasm on the part of the teaching staff, and quite frankly, the entire school was appalling. My son was a good student and a well behaved one. The entire atmosphere there was a downer. So much time and effort is spent on security there is no energy left for the joy of learning. I feel bringing my son to this school was an unfair and spoiling experience for him |
| 8/10/2003 | parent | I have one child who graduated from SDHS and another child who will be a Junior in the 2003/2004 school year. GPAs have ranged between 2.87 and 3.8 over the years. I am satisfied with the course availability and general atmosphere, however, there have been some concerns. I have found many errors over the last 5 years in administrative recordkeeping.(Inaccurate attendance records; dropped, missing, and changed report card grades, inaccurate GPA's,lost community service packets, etc.)In addition, I have had interaction with 5 teachers that I have found substandard. (I am a teacher, also.) These teachers have been unable, or unwilling, to communicate with me regarding specific requirements for their class, and how percentages are determined (when not following the standard acceptable format.) Don't get me wrong, I have recommended the school to parents, whose children appear self-motivated,but always with the warning to keep everything that comes home and keep a copy of everything that is sent in. |
