5/18/2011parentHorrible! The students there think they are so smart just because they are the "best" school in the district. I was about to send my son there but I sent him to CMS where he is having a great time. Compared to Lakewood, this school is just unfair.
4/9/2011parentHave been in D300 since 1999, I have found that the elementary schools don't have a true problem with bullies. However, even though the district boasts of a "No tolerance" policy regarding dealing with bullying; I can testify that is not the case especially at the middle school and high school levels. It will be investigated upon reporting it - sometimes- depending on whom you talk to but overall it does not alleviate the problem. The child who is doing the bullying basically ends up getting away with it as the school admin does not do enough to prevent it. This has happened on more than one occasion and with different children I have had the privilege to know. It is better to be informed than be ignorant because when I heard that this district had this policy I was thrilled upon moving here. Having been here and experienced it I am not so thrilled. I think that they need to use in-school suspension for the repeat bully offenders and remand then to seek psychiatric evaluation when they don't stop it. I can see future headlines as one of these repeat offenders finally goes over the edge and really hurts or kills someone because they let it slide for too long.
1/6/2011parentThis school has the poorest communcation of any school that I have ever been involved with. You call for information and then when you follow through on the direction given, you find out that you were misinformed. I have had 2 students that have gone to this school and it gets worse every year. They are also terrible with notifying you when an accident occurs in dealing with your child. I would not recommend going to this school.
10/13/2010parentSince my children have started at Westfield they really enjoy going to school, the staff is great!
10/13/2010parentWestfield puts students first! They participate in community initiatives throughout the year and really encourage student involvement. Our teachers are fantastic! Many have been with Westfield for 20 years & go above & beyond to not only educate, but to encourage students to be the best they can be!
10/13/2010parentWe are new to Westfield and have been pleasantly surprised at how helpful and friendly the staff and parents have been. My son also commented that the kids are really friendly and several have asked how he likes his new school so far. We have been extremely pleased.
10/13/2010parentI love Westfield Community School because the students, faculty and families have great school spirit--From the principal down to the crossing guard.
10/12/2010parentI love the teachers at Westfield. I have experience 6 teachers now and have absolutly loved each of them as have all my 3 children. They are really making a great impact on their little lives - thank you Westfield Teachers!
10/12/2010parentI love Westfield, because it is not just a school, but a family to the students. We are blessed to have the most caring and dedicated teachers and Principle.
4/16/2010parentWestfield Community School has the best middle school teachers!! They are learning champions!! They promote creativity and individualism!
2/8/2010parenti thnk that the 6th graders on 6B have way too much home work. my child sits down after school and she stays there til about dinner time and sometimes after!! she also participates into activities outside of shcool and ends up getting missing assignments in her classes because she doesnt have time to finish it. she is also trying too finish it in the morning and on the bus. i really think that the students have way too much homework!!!!
1/12/2010studentI am attending WCS right now and I have to say it is a overall good school. The classrooms are not crowded and most of the teachers are nice. The teachers, for the most hand, are very patient and teach very well. They go into details to explain things when you are confused. They have many clubs and sports to play. However I do agree with how they grade gym (warning this is coming from a girl who cant shoot a basket to save her life) for pacers you are graded on how well you do and not how hard you try. I remember one of my teachers saying 'Even if you study hard for a test you still might fail' so gym is graded on how well you do which I disagree with because not everyone can run really fast and play a sport. Overall WCS is a good school
1/4/2010parentI have two children in elementary school at Westfield and have been generally very happy. The teachers and support staff have been very responsive and helpful. Administration is very approachable and involved. We see one or more of them at every school event. I have to agree with the other posters that if your child is an average/above average student, he/she will do very well here. If your child requires special services, you will need to be a strong advocate. Sadly, parent participation is not what it should be. There are a handful of parents that are very involved while the majority do very little if anything at all. I do not think this situation is unique to WCS but this school of 1800 students could offer some really great things if it had greater parental involvement.
10/23/2009parent'If you are a bright, shiny star, you'll be fine. Otherwise, be ready to be your child's only advocate. ' This was previously posted and I agree 100%. How this school rated an 8 out of 10 on this website I'll never understand.
5/27/2009parentThe 6th & 7th grade teachers aree not capable of teaching. I should of never took my daughter out of private school.
4/29/2009parentIf you are a bright, shiny star, you'll be fine. Otherwise, be ready to be your child's only advocate.
3/3/2009parentMost of teachers are great. Great sports program for a middle school. better than the high school
2/6/2009studentI am currently a student at WCS and I have to say I have enjoyed the years I've been at this school but only for the memories not the teachers and staff.First of all, it seems the teachers don't enjoy their jobs or even care and some aren't the greatest at teaching. Also, teachers aren't gonna change a students mind if they threaten to write you up. Oh yeah we are so scared. It is hard to notice how clueless the teachers are because they never catch students text messaging during class and it's so ridiculos. What really makes me mad is when their is possibly a fight or people aren't doing what they're supposed to the teachers just stand there as if their waiting for a bus. How lovely. I also think some teachers pick on certain students more than others.
10/3/2008parentthe teachers treat the students very well, my son has been improving very well ever since he moved from Dundee middle school to Westfield!
9/28/2007parentTo many principals and overlay positions. I will be putting my child in a private school. I voted yes and I was duped!
5/6/2007parentWestfield School has too much overhead. The class sizes are way to large and well above the state average. They need more teachers and less administration. One principal and less overlay positions. All of the Tax dollars have gotten the students nothing so I will be putting my child in a private school. The kids are great kids and I feel sorry for they are not getting the education they deserve.
2/12/2007parentWestfield is an excellent schools with wonderful, dedicated administrators, teachers and staff. Parent participation, despite the administration's efforts is not what it could be but that can probably be said of any public school. I have two children at Westfield and they are both thriving there.
9/27/2006parentI have had 4 children attend Westfield in the last 8 years and currently have 1 there now. I have found that if the child is academically gifted, then they have no problems with the teachers and get a lot out of the curriculum. However, I have had two children who had difficulties in reading, thus affecting all of their classes, I found the teachers to be less patient and very critical. I am afraid for my daughter attending now because she has a reading deficit and I feel she won't get the help needed and the teachers will be unhelpful. I spend endless hours with her each night doing homework, as I did with the other two. There needs to be more help offered to these students and more empathy from the teachers.
3/6/2006parentMoved here 1 year ago. My child in Westfield Community unfortunatly no longer has the ability to want to go to school. Not enough patience and availability from staff to encourage good work.
1/16/2006former studentI really don't like wcs. All the teacher's there are completely clueless. Plus mean. The principal's are way too strict. They get really really mad if you just do something funny. They do not know how to have fun in this school. If you want a good place for your child do not put them here. No parent's help here. About 5 parents out of all of the children in this school help. The extracurricular activities aren't that great either. They're depriving the children, especially the 6-8 graders, of freedom. The 6-8 grader's will have no art? No music? How do you think they're going to take out their energy? Doing something bad, most likely. Unless you want to deprive your children of art and other things, and place them with annoying, clueless teachers, do not put them in westfield community school. Thanks.
1/13/2006parentWith 3 students in WCS I have been impressed with the academic programs. In my opinion math and literature curricular content is emphasized while science, social studies and language arts (spelling & grammar) are adequately supported by teaching eforts. Currently, the music, art and other extracurricular activities are very good, however there future hinges on the passage of a referendum in 3/06 to maintain funding. Parent invovlement int heir students education is generally appropriate and the school does its best to make the best decions and have rules that pertain to all the students.
3/31/2005parentI love this school, it is one of the best schools ever.
1/21/2005parentThere are too many children in each classroom. I think most grades have 35 children.
1/5/2005studenti hate this school so much...gym is the worst though...do they honestly think that by making us run stupid pacers every week it will teach us something in real life?...i think not...and as for the principal i really dislike her...she made my teacher take a very good book off of the reading list because of the violence im 14 i think i know how to handle myself and it teachs us about the real world and how this could even happen to this school. Im totally looking forward to leaving for high school next year and i never want to come back!
9/30/2004parentI find that this school is a little overcrowded. The students are asked to pay $6.00 for a locker fee, come to find out most of the students have to share a locker. Other than that, I don't have to many issues. My daughter loves the school and her teachers.(6th grade). She is learning a lot, but it's not too heavy of a work load.
6/30/2004parentI noticed that it said 19 kids to a teacher. That is not accurate. The student to teacher ratio is about 34. 4th grade this year (2004/2005) is going to have 40 kids per class to dispurse the multi age class. Otherwise I find Westfield to be adequate.
4/9/2004studentThis school is horrendus. The education is horrible. This year (8th grade) I can honestly say my mind has asorbed not even 10% of the information (I'm a straight A student so I yearn to learn). They worry about social life too much. The 8th grade teachers use yelling and threats of taking away privleges as a form of disipline. 95% of the students cheat and only care truthfully about social life. I feel as if my needs and right of a proper education are ignored. WCS gives nothing back to the community. We recieve an education like that of the slums. Not what is expected from an upper middle class school district. Only a few teachers actually care about the students.
8/22/2003parentThis school is bad my child hates it it has no fun projects at my other childs school they had a micro mall its is a mall that you shop at with your doggles (money u earn from your work)you would work 2s a week at jobs like yearbook, candy making and more I would reather have my child go there. thank you alot for reading this
