Good place to live but the winters are long.... - 7/3/2006
Anchorage has come a long way....the box stores and chain restaurants have arrived in force! Fortunately there is still enough local and regional business to keep the mix healthy and interesting. Population is low (comparatively) however we have been beseiged with more crime than the average city of this size. Still the crime seems to be that of association - not random acts. The thing that never changes is the fact that winters are long. You can probably plan on snow in September and it may still be on the ground in April. Road crews do a decent job. Anchorage drivers are generally rude and in a hurry to get to the next stoplight. Overall economy is healthy. Schools are good with lots of options. If you like to fish or hunt you will like this area. Lots of trails for hiking and biking (watch out for the bears and the moose - seriously). Remember it is a three - four hour flight to get to Seattle so don't plan on a quick nor affordable weekend visit with friends or family the live in Read More

Hello Alaska - 7/1/2006
Expensive but safer than most cities it's size. Homes are a real kicker so is the basic necessities of life but if you are the type that loves a mix of both big town feeling and scenary and being close to nature (mountains, sea etc, love hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing etc, you would be well at Read More

However, the air here is great! - 5/9/2006
Anchorage is a good town for people who like cold weather, are old and don't want to go anywhere, like grey skies all year, and can live on about 5 hours of daylight in the winter, and sleepless nights in the summer. The summer here is about two months long, autumn is for about one month, and the rest is winter. In the winter all the roads are compleatly covered with ice, and this year it even snowed in May.
If you ever call a company in the lower 48 states, like and insurance company for example, they usually will give you a high rate for insurance, and some of them just tell you that they don't work with Alaska. They don't consider Alaska part of the U.S. The mail usually takes at least one week more to get here than in the continental U.S. Anything new that happens in the lower 48 states, gets to Alaska in about two-three years (ex: fashion, movies.) The food here is not ripe most of the time, it rots before it gets ripe. Winter is very, very, depressing so many people take Read More

Lots of misperceptions, it's better than others th - 4/14/2006
I think Anchorage is a great place to live, there is a lot of open space in the city, lots of trails, parks, lakes, and creeks to recreate in during the summer and winter too. It is not dark here, we always have some daylight, even in the winter though then it's down to maybe a few hours a day. It is kind of expensive to live here - the median home price is around $300,000 give or take. But Anchorage has no sales tax, there is no state income tax, and I feel it's a good place to live and raise a Read More

My family has lived in Anchorage for a year. A YEAR TOO LONG!!
This city seems to be a magnent for all the people who couldnt get along in the "real world". The people here are RUDE, and even at times SCARY. Ive had complete strangers threaten me for not moving my shopping cart far enough out of the way in the grocery line, and elderly women scream obscenities at me while Im dropping off my movies at the rental place. Myself and two teenage sons stopped to help an old man who was trying to push his stalled truck out of traffic. Not one other car stopped to help. I wish I could say these are exceptions, however Ive also had to have law enforcement out to my home because the neighbors are out in the street screaming and threating my small children. (In one of the most affluent neighborhoods in town, we arent talking the "wrong side of the tracks" here.) On top of all this, Anchorage seems to have the most crime of any city/town Ive lived in. Shootings at the shopping Read More

Conveniences close to home - 8/31/2005
Although Anchorage has its problems, its unique aspects more than make up for them. One of the last frontiers on Earth is literally right out your backdoor, ready and waiting to be explored. Kids love waking up to find moose in the yard, and who can resist a snowball fight or a troop of snowmen? The excellent standards set and met by the area's schools are another benefit for children. You can be five minutes from malls and department stores and not have a zero lot line, although this trend is fading and are more prevalent in older homes. All in all, Anchorage is the perfect refuge for people of all ages who enjoy both modern conveniences and the ability to get away from it all for days, weeks, or longer in varying levels of nearby Read More
