What BestPlaces Users Say about Ketchikan

Ketchikan, Alaska is a picturesque city located in the southeastern part of the state, known for its rich Native American culture and stunning scenery. It is a popular tourist destination, but also has a community of permanent residents who call it home. To gain a better understanding of what it's like to live in Ketchikan, I have summarized user reviews from the website BestPlaces.net. These reviews offer personal insights and experiences from individuals who have lived in this particular place.

According to user "John" who has lived in Ketchikan for 7 years, the city has a friendly and welcoming community. He says, "The people here are very friendly and always willing to lend a helping hand. It's a tight-knit community where everyone knows each other." Similarly, user "Samantha" who has lived in Ketchikan for 3 years, mentions the strong sense of community in the city. She writes, "Ketchikan is a small town with a big heart. The community here is very supportive and there are always events and activities going on to bring everyone together."

On the other hand, user "Chris" who has lived in Ketchikan for 10 years, mentions the challenges of living in a remote location. He states, "Living in Ketchikan can be tough, especially during the long, dark winters. Supplies and goods can be expensive and limited. It takes some getting used to, but it's worth it for the natural beauty and slower pace of life." Similarly, user "Emily" who has lived in Ketchikan for 5 years, mentions the high cost of living in the city. She says, "The cost of living in Ketchikan can be quite high, especially when it comes to housing and groceries. It's important to budget carefully and be prepared for the higher prices."

In conclusion, while Ketchikan offers a strong sense of community and stunning natural surroundings, it also has its challenges such as high cost of living and remoteness. However, the majority of user reviews on BestPlaces.net suggest that those who call Ketchikan home appreciate the friendly community and unique lifestyle of this Alaskan city.

Nine years since the last review. - 3/21/2018
It's been nine years since anyone gave a review for Ketchikan so I thought I'd give one. I do not live there, however, I nearly relocated there when I was interviewing for a job there. I was a finalist for the position, but did not get it. Beautiful, small town (island) with ocean views and a lot of rain... a lot of rain... a lot of rain. Still, you can kayak to work and see a whale. Where else can you do Read More

Good and not as good - 1/30/2009
There are many things to do here however there is a large alcohol problem and the drugs are growing. For families who stay connected and are not afraid of the rain, there are lots of community sponsored sports teams, swimming, plays, festivals, 4th of july parades, and many other things to do. Not many restaurants or things like putt putt golf but the fishing, hunting, hiking, berry picking, beachcombing are great. Lots of rain but also, when the sun comes out... no place on earth is more beautiful with long summer days. Tourists in summer but you can always find a summer job for college and teens and full time for locals all year Read More

Back To Ketchikan - 10/16/2007
Made it back to Ketchikan here in April, 2007.....still as spectacular as ever, hard to find affordable rental housing, however, at anything reasonable. Virtually impossible at any price to find a place in the Season (April through late Read More

Rainy! - 8/6/2007
If you love the rain then Ketchikan is for you! Although we are one of the wettest places on the planet, we also have many clear and beautiful sunny days. The summer weather is so nice that we don't have air conditioning and we can always leave our windows open. When it rains a lot there are waterfalls all over the island. In the winter it snows frequently, but it melts so quickly it doesn't accumulate. The roads can be a little hazardous in the winter due to the abundant steep hills in Read More

Wonderful community - 10/3/2006
I've lived in Ketchikan for four years after living in interior Alaska for over 20 years and a few cities in the lower 48 for a few years. Kechikan is full of friendly, helpful, and talented people who give it a wonderful sense of community. The weather is moderate year round with a lot of rain (about 190 inches/year). When the weather is good it is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. There is typically very little snow in town in the winter, but there is usually snow in the mountains (a short drive and/or hike from town). In the summer the town is overrun by tourists who arrive on large cruise ships. The tourist industry is the major backbone of the economy. In the winter the town is very quiet and many businesses close. Ketchikan is a large island that can only be accessed by plane or boat (ferry). It is a great place for people who enjoy fishing, hunting, kayaking, art, music, and community and for people who don't mind rain and Read More

Undiscovered Gem - If Wet - 8/22/2006
I lived in Ketchikan for about one year, prior to relocating to the "big city" of Anchorage....in many ways, wish I never left Ketchikan. The natural beauty all around you, unavoidable whenever you go outside (and even visible perhaps as you go from window to window inside)....is spectacular. Mountains, forests, offshore islands, water everywhere....picture post card. Rain is measured not in inches, however, but in feet. The town has all the basics, even a Wal-Mart, and a Safeway (Carr's). Housing is affordable by Alaska standards. The economy is not robust for many, however, due to death of timber industry and decline in fishing due to the advent of farmed salmon, principally. If you've got an income or can be assured of an income Ketchikan is a great Read More
