not what it used to be - 5/3/2006
I'm a Phoenix native, have lived in a few other cities and am increasingly frustrated and disappointed upon returning home. The rate at which this city is growing has completely destroyed any hope of it keeping it's identity. People love to point out it's lack of culture, but I think those of us who have lived here for at least 20 years recognize that it DID have culture--it was a totally unique city before the mass development. People used to live here for the love of desert living. Now, it s a generic anytown, same stripmall stores and hideous housing developments on every corner. The desert is treated as wasteland, the traffic is worse every day, and schools can't keep up. I used to love it here, now that is so hard to Read More

Not a good place to raise a family/ No culture - 4/22/2006
The only good thing about phoenix ,AZ is the winter weather. everthing else sucks. they have the worst driver I have ever seen, the housing cost are just crazy out of control. I could have stayed in chicago if I knew that the prices would have gotten this high. The people here are rude and there's no culture here !The only thing this city has to offer is crazy night clubs fill of drugs. Crime is just as bad as it was in chicago, hell chicago didnt seem this bad.one last thing I just got seven months left in this hell hole. When it comes to culture and entertainment, and a beautiful downtown phoenix needs to take notes from the big boys Chicago, New Read More

Too many people... - 4/19/2006
My husband and I have lived in Phoenix for two years and have finally decided it's time to go. While the weather is gorgeous and the desert a beautiful treat, there are too many people moving here. The sprawl, the pollution, the traffic...all take away from the quality of life that we're seeking. We'd rather not contribute to the overpopulation of this fragile ecosystem. It's much too sad to see the desert being bulldozed under at such a breakneck rate.

Real Estate Wolves - 4/16/2006
Considering the fact that a bit over a year ago you could buy a nice newer home for around $160K and you can't move into the same home now for $300K, I'd say that if you move here, plan on making at least $70K a year to live comfortably.
The Phoenix-Metro area has been a mecca for anyone that works in the mortgage finance/Real Estate area, and the greed of thousands of loan officers and real estate agents have made it too expensive for the budgets of the unmarried, or uninherited. If you do look for a home, be prepared to be attacked by at least 20 loan wolves at the same time, not to mention many real estate agents that think they have the best deal for you. Submit your personal contact information to one online agency and be prepared to have your personal information spread throughout the entire city.

I inquired about the possibility of buying a home here, online, and I've since then counted over 100 e-mails, and 12 phone messages from people I don't know that Read More

Great climate if you don't care about air and wate - 4/16/2006
It doesn't matter what the weather is like if you can't do anything outside because of a high pollution advisory. Phoenix has the hardest water in the country, and the fewest days per year rated as "good" air quality.Read More

I was raised in Detroit, lived in Denver for a few years, and have been in Phoenix since '03. After 3 years in this hellhole, I am completely confounded as to why this place continues to gain population at such a remarkable pace, or why anyone would choose to live here on purpose.

I have to say that this city has actually accomplished what I once thought inpossible: it makes Detroit seem pretty cool by comparison. And Denver? Please. Phoenix is so inferior to the mile high city in every aspect of livability and likability, it isn't even remotely close.

Ditto everything that was said above: the crime here is terrible, the pollution's disgusting, the people are AWFUL (rednecks, gangsters, retirees and rich a-holes), the schools suck, sprawl is out of control (no downtown whatsoever; Detroit's was way cooler), and of course the summers... UGH. Five straight months of having to live in an air conditioned cave, during Read More
