I can't speak spanish! - 8/19/2006
I like Tucson. It's a nice city. I do have one complaint. In my line of work, Social Services, most employers require or even demand someone who is bi-lingual. I wish I could speak spanish but it's a hard language for me to learn. I wish people would at least try to learn to speak english. Most everyone else who immigrates here does. My family came from Norway, my husbands from Germany and they learned the language of America. I am not trying to sound mean but what's up with

Hey Chuck! Why don't you take your head out of your a-- and face reality. I've lived in this city for over 26 years and have been a victim of several crimes. I have family and friends who have also. You are just like all the rest of the pablum pukers who want to believe that tehre is nothing wrong with this city. Go back and look again. Why I had to leave... - 8/6/2006
Would probably be more useful than nitpicking all the details. It's the (lack of) high tech economy for those who are not in the missle-making business. I even had a professional recruiter tell me bluntly my best bet was to go to Phoenix. But I wanted to stay and see so I struggled for 3 years with the lack of career progress getting more and more excruciating. In the end I took a position back east paying twice what I was scraping by on in Tucson and the housing costs are half what it costs to live crunched up next to the freeway in the desert. It has great potential to be a beautiful life, but I think the economically challenged half is losing ground here--engineers and cocktail waitresses

Avg July high is NOT 99!! - 8/4/2006
OMG if only it was that low!! Avg July high is 104-ish. This summer, it hit 112. The hottest I remember is 117, back in 1990 (the Phx hottest has been 120). It's only going to get hotter as the rain dries up. We've been in an 80 yr "lul" with 6+ extra inches per year. Water crisis! - 8/4/2006
I was born and raised here, and would like to offer the following corrections. Some of the stats on this site are wrong.
It lists "Tucson" and "Tucson Heights" both. There's no such thing as "Tucson Heights" (unless it's a private manufactured neighborhood; I haven't heard of it). Also, it lists 13+ inches of rain/year. That's WAY wrong. We got that 20+ years ago. We now get 9 inches/year. This year we're down more than that.
Also, one thing "snowbirds" (non-natives) don't understand is that the water we have is quickly running out. According to the University of Arizona's Geophyics & Hydroogy Dept, we will be OUT of water by 2015. The population is growing way too fast, and the water we do have now is inadequate. Based on data from the U of A Treering Lab, S. Az has been enjoying an unusually wet period over the last 80 years. What we're experiencing now in this so-called 20 year drought (6-9 inches per year) is much closer to the norm in a 400-500 year

Guilty until proven innocent - 7/19/2006
I have lived here for a year now and have found out one thing to be true in Tucson, guilty until proven innocent. I am a 31 year old father of two and I've never been in trouble with the law. However coming to Tucson I have had several run-ins with law inforcement. In fact, I now have a criminal record because I picked up a Gopher Snake off the road on evening on my way home and received a $222 fine for not having an Arizona Hunting License. I understand that ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law but come on. These Game and Fish Agents here are known far and wide (which I have since found out)for assuming everybody is breaking the law. You want to spend some time in the mountains? Well if they get a chance, they will search you entire vehicle to be sure you're not collecting snakes without a license, or a Gila Monster for a pet or whatever else the think of.
