Moved here from San Jose, wouldn't go back - 12/27/2005
I grew up in San Jose, CA and moved to Modesto nearly 17 years ago. I feel at home in Modesto and find it hard to return to the traffic and crowded conditions of San Jose.
My kids love Modesto as this is the only place they have ever lived. Houses and businesses have a/c so the heat is tolerable in the summer. The fall and spring are wonderful here. There are still almond orchards that are pretty when they bloom in the Spring.
I like that earthquakes are rare here (compared to San Jose!) and the weather isn't too crazy--no tornadoes. There was some flooding once when water was released from the Don Pedro dam, but that was back in 1997.
The crime is bad in some areas. We live in a nice area, but cars can still be broken into at night if you don't park them in your garage.
The people here are a mix. It is mostly white or hispanic, some asian and black. I like the diversity.
Housing prices have gone up so much that I don't find it to be very Read More

modesto, love it!or hate it! - 10/4/2005
We just moved from the east coast since my wife couldn't stand the snow there and we choosed to live here in Riverbank, a small city just in the vicinity of Modesto. At first we didn't like it since the city itself is still developing.Lots of farmlands with only a few trees. But as we lived here longer, we are slowly appreciating the area.
I know a lot of people say that the valley is too hot on summer, but what the heck!its better than the hot humid weather in most of the east coast and just think about it, summer doesn,t last that long. Roughly it starts getting really hot on around July and starts to cool down around september. But its dry heat guys!Cumm on!You don't have to play golf in the middle of the day. Try playing at the end of the afternoon.Unless you don't like golf!Tennis courts are everywhere and free and if you want to go to a cooler place you can just drive an hour and a half to Yosemite or the bay area.
Houses are not that expensive.Nevermind the Read More

Do Yourself A favor - 9/13/2005
I have lived in many places including California, Washington, Colorado, And Canada. I am 21 and have lived 18 of those years in modesto off and on. I have seen it grow from a shacktown to a struggling midsize City. First off the weather is horrible. Extremely hot summers and gray foggy winters. Then you have the crime. Ranked #1 in the nation for Car theft, with an evergrowing gang population. Modesto is the meth capital of the World since it is surrounded by farmland(that is being eaten by oversized trackhomes) and it shows in the people you will come in contact with. It is one of the most unhealthy cities to live in with all the agracultural dust and smog. Everything you see was put there by man and there isnt one place in the entire city of which you can go and relax without being hassled in some form. People are rude and in a hury even though they are going nowhere. The entire city is one big grid outlined by farms and methlabs set out in the california valley desert. I lived Read More

Modesto, A-OK - 8/26/2005
I've lived allover CA, from San Jose to Mission Viejo(supposedly the great OC). I lived in Manteca for 14 years spent alot of time in Modesto, shopping, schools etc.
and then, decided to relocate to Orange County. I would give anything to get a transfer back to the Modesto area. People are friendly, down to earth, not so concerned with STATUS and MONEY. Parents are more involved with their kids and while their aren't as many choices for shopping, eating out, and recreation as OC the life is much simpler, way less expensive, and just generally better.

The main downfall in the Modesto area are the schools, but they have a great private school in Modesto and this would be the answer for academics. While I would miss the beaches, Disneyland, and the shopping, I can always come and visit and not have to live in constant turmoil and stress. Thumbs up to Read More

Hot and isolated! - 7/28/2005
I've lived all over California my entire life, from the SF Bay Area to San Diego. Modesto is among the worst places to raise a family I can think of. We're in the process of looking to get out. The weather is not at all mild, it is blazing hot from May to October. The parks aren't very clean, and the kids can't go on them with the weather...the playground equipment is so hot they get burned! Also, the people are very rude and me-first oriented. Not the place to raise kids. The gang problem is so far out of control it's ridiculous, and no peoperty is safe, even if nailed down. Look Read More
