Worst town in western Connecticut - 2/1/2019
I bought a bank owned house in Torrington in 2011 and actually sold it for less in 2018 just to get out of this horrible place. The taxes are awful, 46 mill rate for property owners, huge heroin problem, the worst low life junkies you could ever dream of. The schools are a disaster, the police are useless and crime is much worse than reported. The locals are clannish and prone to crime. My neighbors were off putting and and constantly overdosing on dope, the ambulances were constantly there wasting my tax money on narcan. A puke pile teeming with maggots, avoid at all costs. Read More

Torrington, CT - A balanced review - 3/17/2018
I have lived and worked in Torrington for 25 years, but am not originally from here. Torrington is the biggest city, really the only city, in NW CT. Further north and west and it becomes quite rural. Its about 20 minutes to Waterbury in the South, about an hour to Hartford and an hour to the airport. There are no direct highway connections to the rest of the state, except RT 8 which runs north/south. This means the NW corner is somewhat isolated from the rest of the state. There is no rail availability unless one drives to Waterbury, at the closest.

This area is a story of two worlds; the wealthy who live in surrounding communities such as Litchfield (many of whom only come here on weekends and holidays) and the lower-middle class people such as those that live in Torrington. The job market is a bit tight in the area, expect a commute. Property is cheaper in Torrington than elsewhere, but taxes are high. The school system is mediocre and the quality of the school varies Read More

Northwestern CT is beautiful; Torrington has great - 12/29/2015
Except for the winter (which I don't like anywhere), this region is beautiful. Torrington is an old mill town, so parts of it are definitely rough around the edges. On the other hand, it has the classic Warner Theater, a renowned ballet school, art galleries and a downtown that has retained much of its original architecture and historical signage. That said, the town needs more high tech manufacturing to add to its tax base, which draws much too heavily on already tax-burdened property owners. I understand the Yankee Pedlar Inn (a landmark hotel on Main Street) is undergoing a major renovation, which is heartening. At this point, it appears the little city of Torrington could take a significant turn for the better -- or worse. I encourage the city's leadership to sharpen its vision and redouble its efforts to revive this once thriving community. Presently, it's a diamond in the rough, and -- if you haven't seen it -- it's worth a look in large part because it happens to be situated in Read More

Great arts scene - 5/19/2013
The City of Torrington is making an impressive effort to revitalize its downtown area. The city officials' initiatives are impressive to this end. Torrington has great city leaders who truly care and are interested in returning this old mill town to its glory days. The mayor is young and energetic, and he is also accessible to his constituents.

Culturally, Torrington offers a lot for creative types such as artists, writers, musicians, dancers, etc.

Housing is affordable in Torrington; however, property and other types of taxes are not. And taxes are ever-climbing in the city. Connecticut, in general, has always been an expensive place to live. But the easy accessibility to both NYC and Boston, the beauty of the state and its rich cultural offerings have offset the price one has to pay to live here. Unfortunately, taxes in the more urban areas, such as Torrington, are really increasing. To me, this is extremely concerning and it may end up being a Read More

Northwest Hills of CT - 1/1/2013
Litchfield County is a pleasant area to live with rolling hills in the foothills of the Berkshire mountains, yet only a 90 min drive to NYC. Population is diverse depending on the area. Torrington is a mix of low/moderate income & education levels in a small city feel, the suburb areas are mid/high income & education levels combined as a mix of manufacturing workers and professionals. Read More

hidden treasure - 3/27/2010
Torrington is a bustling little town which has been designated by President Bush as the nation's first micropolis. That means that it is a town of less than 50,000 people but with the buying power of 250,000. It is a hub for shopping for all of northwestern ct. and the Berkshire foothills of Massachusetts.

It is an old mill town that is slowly undergoing a renaissance and resurgence. The Warner theater was rennovated through a major community-supported venture headed by local Sharon Dante. It now attracts major name talent from New York and is home to the Nutmeg Ballet providing world-class training to aspiring dancers from numerous areas. The downtown area was devastated in 1955 by two powerful hurricanes back-to-back and The Brass Mill never rebuilt causing a loss of many jobs. The population has remained relatively constant having gained only about 2,000 people over the last thirty years.

It is an ethnically tolerant town that encourages diversity.  Read More

Enjoy classic New England two hours from NYC - 7/12/2006
Torrington is a nice place for a family. School system is pretty good if parents are involved, sports are important. Still quite affordable and lots of new development. It is a town without much industry, but both Hartford and Fairfield County are less than an hour commute. Arts are big - beautifuly restored Warner Theatre and Nutmeg Ballet Company. Rural and expensive Litchfield County offers lots of natural beauty as well as upscale dining. Opportunities for celebrity-watching, but most locals are Read More

Torrington CT - 9/28/2005
Torrington is a really nice city with good public schools. Torrington has a low crime rate. Torrington does not have good public transportation so a car is a must. There is not a whole lot going on in the little city but that can be a good thing. Torrington is 35 minutes from Hartford the capitol city and New Haven a bigger city as Read More
