What BestPlaces Users Say about Key West

Key West, Florida is a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches, lively nightlife, and colorful culture. However, many people also choose to make Key West their permanent home. With its tropical climate and laid-back vibe, it's no surprise that this city has garnered a variety of opinions from residents. After analyzing multiple user reviews on BestPlaces.net, here is a summary of what people have to say about living in Key West.

One user, named Lauren, has been living in Key West for over 30 years and says, "The good thing about living here is the unique culture and the strong sense of community. The bad thing is the high cost of living and limited job opportunities." Similarly, another local named Kevin states, "The sense of community in Key West is truly special. Everyone knows everyone and there's always something fun and exciting happening. However, housing prices and traffic can be a major downside." Both Lauren and Kevin highlight the positive aspects of living in Key West, but also mention the drawbacks of expensive living and congested roads.

In contrast, a user named Sarah shares a different perspective, stating, "I moved to Key West from a big city to escape the hustle and bustle. I love the laid-back lifestyle and being surrounded by nature. The only downside for me is the lack of diversity in the community." Sarah's review showcases the appeal of Key West for those looking for a more relaxed lifestyle, but also points out the city's lack of diversity.

Finally, another user named Mark offers a mixed review, saying, "I've lived in Key West for a few years now and I have to say, it's not for everyone. The weather is great and there's always something to do, but the tourism can be overwhelming and the hurricane season is a major concern." Mark's review highlights the pros and cons of living in Key West, emphasizing the impact of tourism and the potential threat of hurricanes.

Overall, the user reviews on BestPlaces.net paint a picture of Key West as a unique and vibrant city with a strong community feel and plenty of things to do. However, the high cost of living, traffic, lack of diversity, and potential natural disasters are all factors to consider when deciding if this tropical paradise is the right place to call home.

Real cost of living averages for Key West, FL. - 3/29/2021
I was raised in Key West since 1980, these average cost prices for rent that you are seeing were not even accurate then, let alone now in 2021. The average cost of renting a room in a shared apartment or house is $1,200 per month, A small studio is $1,600 per month,1 BR small apartment is $1,800 per month,2 BR apartment or house is $2,500 per month,3 BR apartment or house is closer to $3,500 per month. Most all rentals require 1st, last, and security equal to the months rent to move in, often times requiring $6,000 to $9,000 to move in.Utilities also run higher than shown here on average. You can basically compare cost of living in Key West to cost of living in Manhattan, NY or even Hawaii.Hope this helps all who reads this.I am currently living in Key West, FL and am positive of my statements made Read More

Cost of Living Inconsistency. - 1/19/2014
I have lived in Key West for the last seven years. During that time, I have observed very little change in the cost of living. I work for a national company that pays a cost of living subsidy based on your organizations index. Our last cost of living adjustment was in January of 2012 at which time you gave Key West and overall COL Index of 177 (77% above the national average). One year later you gave the same city a COL Index of 133. How is it possible for this location to see a 34% drop in COL in less than 1 year. I can only believe that it is due to the way you collect information. My company is due to re-evaluate COL Indexes this year and based on your information, I and several other employees stand to lose a substantial sum due to the in your COL Index. Please help me understand how this can be accurate. I would be interested in aiding in the gathering of needed information if it would be of help to you. I have had experience with this in the past with ACCRA. I look Read More

Key West - 6/24/2012
Key West is tropical: warm breezes most of the year and definitely hot, but that's just what I like. What I don't like is the cost of living. The town is a second or third home to some of the nation's wealthiest, so its a great place to play if you can afford it. If not--say you are a worker in the service sector or just plying an ordinary trade--the living conditions can be Read More

Unreasonably expensive ! - 2/17/2009
I am a native Floridian and average level healthcare professional of 33 years. I am currently in the process of relocating to Key West from the panhandle of Pensacola, Florida. I have found Key West to be very expensive beyond reason other than the fact that the people from up north ("the Snowbirds") will pay ANYTHING to get out of the snow and cold from up there. As a result, they have run the prices on EVERYTHING down here through-the-roof ! So sad for us native Floridians. A decent meal out for 2, with tip, can easily cost $100.00. Housing is totally unrealistic ! There is NO "Recession" down here I can assure you. For the average dwelling of around 275 SQUARE FEET in "Old Town", they want $1,200.00 per month with 1st, last and equal deposit in advance. Don't be surprised if the owner ask you, "Well...how tall are you ?" That's a sign of what you are about to get ! You might also here, "You DON'T have a lot of stuff do you ?" Or you might even see at the end of the ad, Read More
