Worse than you can imagine - 7/9/2012
Let me start out by stating: I am a NATIVE Floridian, born in West Palm Beach and have lived my entire life in this area. I believe I can actually give an objective review of this city. Since the late 90's, this area has gone significantly downhill. It's been overrun with illegals, the homeless, and criminals. Go to the Wal-Mart on Belvedere & Military and I'll give you $100 for every ENGLISH-only speaking person you find in that store (this includes both shoppers and employees. I am not against immigrants from other countries (I am the granddaughter of Italian immigrants) BUT I HAVE A PROBLEM WHEN THEY COME HERE AND DON'T BOTHER TO LEARN THE LANGUAGE. TRY CALLING A UTILITY COMPANY AND YOU HAVE TO PRESS A BUTTON TO SPEAK TO THE CSR IN ENGLISH.
It drives me CRAZY to hear nothing but Spanish or Creole when I go into a store/restaurant/gas station. You can't go to a convenience store or gas station without being harassed for spare change. The first sight people arriving at Read More

The weather is amazing all year round and the ocean lifestyle is huge. So if your really into watersports, rum runners and the sun come on down. The only bummer is summer is intense and the chance of hurricanes. All in all its a very active Read More

In defense of my hometown... - 7/10/2009
I have lived in West Palm Beach for almost my entire life and it's not as bad as people are making it out to be. After reading some of the other comments I do have a few responses:

When I was in elementary and middle school, West Palm was less developed and there were a lot less people. Once more people started to move into the area, it became more crowded, as to be expected. Prices started to go up and we had a lot of people coming down here from New England, especially New York. In my experience, a lot of people move down here and expect it to be like how it was where they were living before. You can't realistically expect to move to a completely different region of the country and for things to stay the same. Yes, we wear flip flops all the time. It's in the 80s and 90s for a good majority of the year and our dirt isn't dirt- it's sand! If you want high fashion, then go back to New York. I'm just trying to get through the day without passing out from heat Read More

This is a very high crime rate city also the cost of living is very high.
Lot rent for a mobile home is $515.00 pr month, and you have to cut you own grass and pay for water.

Only fun if your rich - 10/9/2008
I was born and raised here in west palm. First off there is a lot of crime here. My home has been robbed several times. The weather is 50/50 in the wunter its great. Crisp cool days very little rain. Winter is the only good time to be in Florida. But it does come at a cost. The roads are packed with old people that can't drive. The summer on the other hand is horrible. Its hot and humid and it rains alot. The people here are rude and generally not too friendly. The public schools here suck but they are getting better. If you like the night life you will find lots to do here, but if your looking for a nice place to raise children this is not it. The roads and highways in this town seem to be in a constant state of construction that seems to have no end in sight. The homes are all over priced. We also have a problem with homeless people and drugs in our streets at night. I can't even stop to get gas without being hassled for spare change. I just want to go somewhere that is nice and has Read More

Very Diverse - 9/23/2008
Yes, there are lots of poor black neighborhoods, but then again there are also poor white and Hispanic neighborhoods as well. Not to mention the fact that West Palm Beach is one of the few areas in the U.S. with an actual black middle class!

West Palm Beach is the most diverse city in Florida, so I don't know what some have said about segregation. Yes, there's tons of crime, but it's not sexist, racist, or homophobic. Can you prove these things? Because this area seems more tolerant of that than many other parts of the country.Read More

New Yorkers-DO NOT MOVE TO FLORIDA!!!!! - 8/30/2008
I have lived in West Palm Beach for a year and moved here from NY state. All you New Yorkers: DO NOT MOVE HERE!! Call this fair warning. They hate us here and make that known everywhere you go. The workplace is a joke with pays that are obscene. I was making 45.00 an hour on Long Island but was offered 12.00 for the same job. This is an "At Will" work state. They fire and hire workers in a seemingly indiscriminate way higgledeepiggledee without fair warning or within reason. Permanent jobs are almost nonexistent. This is a hustler's state.

In addition make no mistake about it this is a racist, homophobic, sexist part of the world. Blacks still live a segregated life here and are treated more than badly. The treatment is both subtle and blatant.

Crime is very high here although I have not run into any of it personally. People in houses have had problems with home invasion and theft in my neighborhood.

Security companies are made up of mostly Read More
