Marshaltown, Iowa versus Pekin - 11/6/2010
My review is a question to residents of Marshaltown, Iowa. Recent talk is that Pekin, Illinois is getting a Swift Pork processing plant. The residents are restless and after googleing pork plant in Marshaltown, I found a lot of negative feedback about the economy, crime, illegals, etc since the pork plant came to their city.

We have rather quiet city of 33,000 people supported by many companies, including Caterpillar in Peoria, Illinois. A lot of our inhabitants are retired and move south in the winter months. We have our fair share of poverty compared to neighboring towns, primarily because of the prison. Our Boys & Girls Club is active supporting the kids with activities and sports.

We do not need more crime, drugs and poverty at this point. We want people to move back to Pekin because of the positive things we have to offer.

What is the feeling of those cities that have allowed a pork plant to move to town?

Thank you,

I have traveled and lived all over the world. Pekin rates about in the middle of the places I have lived. Small town atmosphere with some bigger city facilities. The best part of Pekin is the park system. They have a beautiful lagoon with a large adjoining park with playground and baseball fields. Two public golf courses (one is PGA rated) and several parks/forest preserves outside of the city limits that offer horse riding, archery ranges, walking trails, biking trails etc. Pekin sits about 15 minutes from dowtown Peoria. There you will find many fine restaurants and after hours Read More

Not my kind of place to live. - 7/15/2006
There is not a whole lot to do unless you want to eat at every fast-food restaurant there is. They do have a very nice public park with volleyball and tennis courts along with mini golf and a mini water park. There is NO public transpertation. No culture. No diversity. No customer service. So if you like the country (corn fields) and factories this place is for Read More
