Oelwein, IA is a small city located in Fayette county with a population of just over 3,000 people. Despite its size, the city offers plenty of activities and attractions for visitors to enjoy. Oelwein is well known for its friendly locals and their commitment to preserving the city’s past through their historical buildings and monuments. The historic downtown area has been beautifully preserved and provides visitors with great shopping, dining, and entertainment options. There are also many parks in the area that provide outdoor recreation opportunities such as fishing, hiking, and biking trails.
The reviews of Oelwein are extremely positive overall. Visitors have found it to be an enjoyable place with great food, interesting sights to see, and plenty of things to do outdoors. Many people have also praised the hospitality of the locals who always seem willing to help you out or give you advice on what attractions are worth visiting while in town. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - 6/5/2009
Oelwein is a decent city with above-average schools that is attempting to right a somewhat negative image. I lived there for seven years after living in several similar-sized communities and the people are the most genuine I have ever been around - they make the community.
The community has a beautiful new library and a relatively new theater and wellness center (though membership is pricey).
For a town this size there are a lot of good places to eat, no matter what you like. Good Italian food, Chinese food and Mexican food are on the main block downtown, not to mention the traditional American grub.
Shopping choices leave a little bit to be desired. Downtown is dominated by second-hand stores; small, quaint shops just don't seem to make it. There's a decent big-box, and the city has tried to draw businesses, but people don't buy from them.
