there are a few good things about the area, but not many. you would think that having a "major" university in the area would promote cultural awareness and diversity. this place is a joke. kansas just seems like it is 30 years behind the rest of the country. i can't understand why someone would want to live here unless they had no other choice, maybe because of their job(military), or k-state was the most cost effective school for them. i don't want to totally trash the place, there are a lot of nice people, and a lot of outdoor activities in the Read More

Great community - 5/9/2007
Manhattan's community welcomes the students of Kansas State and shares in the diverse culture it brings. Although it is not for urban socialites, there are fun music festivities to attend (i.e. Arts in the Park Series, Birdhouse at the Arts Center, Country Stampede) and great recreation spots such as the Linear Trail, City Park, Anneberg Park and Konza Prairie. A small town atmosphere with a light taste of the city. Alumni alike love "their town" and their Alma Mater. Some may outgrow Manhattan post-graduation, while others may grow to love it even more and decide to stay. Whatever your perspective, the students are always good for a Read More

Great college community - 3/16/2007
I know Manhattan very well since I lived there for numerous years. I've also lived in several other places, and I travel for a living on a weekly basis around North America, and I can tell you Manhattan is a very special place. The biggest influence is Kansas State University (24,000 students), a comprehensive, award-winning Big 12 university that brings in countless cultural events and big-time collegiate athletics. KSU Football and basketball tops the list throughout the fall and winters. 50,000-plus people regularly attend home football games throughout the fall. Manhattan is progressive, well-educated, and culturally aware, compared to much of the rest of the midwest. Other posters on here have complained about the students (i.e. little to do = drinking), but where else isn't that also true? They are in fact, college students. Just because Aggieville (the bar/college shopping area) is a large part of the college scene doesn't mean there is little to do. Aggieville is usually Read More

The Little Apple is a Nice Community - 7/26/2006
We are a military family and moving place to place we see lots of different communities. Weather is definitely not extremes here. Alaska -60 to +90, 159" snow our first year; Mojave desert 120+ for months (don't expect anything under 90 from May to Oct). Can get to 0 in winter. Dry, dry, dry. There are still things to like of both locales. Same with Manhattan. College community (about 50% of the population) keeps it more cosmopolitan than like sized 'in the sticks' places without. The University brings in some cultural events. Low crime. A couple rails-to-trails walking trails, 1 hour from U of Kansas and 2 from Kansas City MO entertainments. Yes, for the college kids drinking, unfortunately is a preoccupation as in other places. A clean town, not the vast variety in food, but more options then other places I've lived. The Supper Club (Harvey's? Harry's?) is fabulous, there are several Chinese and Mexican, some eclectic in the college town area (as well as a wonderful Read More
