Basics Needed To Thive - 4/18/2018
Sadley, there's little hope if this town can rise up to overcome the extreme poverty of this socio-economical class in an underserved community, unless... PARENTS do their part ! and the school system steps it up and provides not good , but great EDUCATION, opportunities , and dreams. kids needs role models and examples if they can't get it at home, or school, they need someone to guide them .The children are the next generation and the cities future ! The excessive disability ,SSI, and fedral and state welfare programs are only compounding the problem of poverty and lack of productivity and then drugs and crime naturally play a roll and the generational cycle continues..:( wish I lived closer to help if I could ! Read More

Great place to live and work - 1/4/2015
I have lived and worked in Lewiston-Auburn for nearly 30 years and I think it's a wonderful place to raise a family. We sent both our kids to the Lewiston public schools and they both went on to graduate college and enter successful careers. I think the cities have done an exceptional job integrating the significant number of Somali students. The L-A area is safe, clean and friendly. It is the second largest metro area in Maine but still manages to have a small town feel. L-A has the largest and most vibrant Chamber of Commerce in the state, with a very active Young Professionals group that lends it youthful vitality and new ideas. Anyone who has attended one of the many art walks downtown can attest to that. The area has rebounded nicely from the recent recession. There are new restaurants, new hotels and many new small businesses. In addition, there was much happening here before the recession. The Walmart distribution center and before that, renovation of the Bates Mill Read More

No place I would recommend - 6/24/2013
Despite years of efforts to revitalize Maine's second largest city, it seems Lewiston will always be joked about as the "armpit" of the State. City and State leaders have dedicated a lot of time and money to creating "luxury" type hotels, restaurants, and so called culture, but what is not changing ( and unlikely ever will)is the population here. Although there are a number of intelligent, driven, successful, and good people here, Lewiston is known for it's crime, bad education system, and increasingly deteriorating downtown area with more and more condemned and abandonded buildings. Over the last several years there has been a large influx of Somalian immigrants move into the area. Although the tensions have settled down immensely, there is still some controversy regarding that issue. It has been said it's easy to get Welfare here - that was the reason for the large number of them that moved here - that has angered many taxpayers. I have also been told otherwise. Even the City's Read More

Positive Changes - 9/29/2008
The City of Lewiston has changed considerably over the years and has corrected many of the negative aspects that used to define it. While much of the neighboring areas have not yet fully realized this, local businesses, schools, and residents have all seen and felt the changes. Downtown had cleaned up, public theater is doing well, and business seems to be growing. The Androscoggin Chamber of Commerce is the perfect bellwether for this change. The chamber is active and growing which has a most positive influence on the area.

Living in Maine - 4/10/2008
Maine is not the best place to live. My property taxes have gone from $1200.00 to $3000.00. We have sales taxes, Excise taxes and on and on. Even though they have raised the taxes drastically they have cut the budget by a billion $$$ because their still expriencing a shortfall.

Mostly they do not snowplow until a storm is over or nearly over. As a nurse I've noticed that people listed as high school graduates can not read even at an 8th grade level. The schools (or teachers) are substandard. I sent my kids to private school (the private schools are very good).

The people in Maine are Democrats, and towards that end the state colleges are ore political they they ought to be. This unfortunately resulted in a failure rate of the state board of nursing at around 25%.

Maine Medical Center boasts being in the top 4 hospitals in the country. This is probably true. But unfortunately I have noticed in Lewiston in the home nursing, Nursing Read More

So far, so good - 10/11/2007
Just moved here about a month ago from Arizona (which I HATED) to Lewiston.

Being from PA myself, I am impressed by this town. It has all that I lacked in the desert. "Greener pastures" and proximity to culture. (Theatre, orchestra, etc).

The people are really nice and laid back here so far.

There is public transport (which I haven't used yet) and so far I am impressed with the medical care system here (especially compared to Read More
