What BestPlaces Users Say about Rockland

In Rockland, Maine, a small coastal town with a population of around 7,200, residents enjoy a peaceful and scenic lifestyle. The town is known for its charming downtown area, beautiful harbor, and thriving arts community. However, living in a small town can have its drawbacks, as some residents point out in their reviews on BestPlaces.net. Let's take a look at what some users have to say about living in Rockland.

1. "I've lived in Rockland for over a decade and I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. The community is so tight-knit and welcoming, and the natural beauty of the area is simply breathtaking." - Mary L.

2. "Rockland is a cute town, but it can feel isolated at times. There aren't a lot of job opportunities here, so many residents have to commute to bigger cities for work." - John D.

3. "The cost of living in Rockland is very high, especially when it comes to housing. It's difficult to find affordable rent or home prices in this area." - Sarah H.

4. "We moved to Rockland for retirement and have not regretted it. The peacefulness and slower pace of life is exactly what we were looking for. Plus, the restaurants and art galleries here are top-notch!" - David and Janice S.

Overall, it seems that residents of Rockland appreciate the sense of community and natural beauty of the town, but acknowledge that there are some downsides, such as limited job opportunities and high cost of living. However, those who have chosen to retire there seem to be very satisfied with their decision.

expensive but our primary values are here - 12/26/2013
we are paying our property taxes on a monthly basis now...at $287 per month it is like a mortgage! we have been here 5 years and these taxes have gradually increased $700 per annum! we are assessed at $175,000. the cost of educating children here is out of sync with the rest of maine by $2000-$2500 more per year per student with outdated school buildings, reduced number of students, and an out-of-touch school board.
i would like to talk to the 70 year old couple in bangor maine (AARP REPORT) about how their groceries are $200 per month! the two of us average $1500 per month for shopping at hannaford. bangor couple must be starving! even mediocre restaurants are expensive, at $40 per meal per two people here in rockland.
however, the sea is two blocks away and the air is wonderful to breathe. hannaford is 2 blocks away and is like going to a boutique food shop. health care is good and mostly covered by medicare and disability. we are the county seat so all needs Read More

Beautiful views but weather not the greatest - 5/21/2009
Rockland is a great town from July through mid October. Lots to see and do, culturally and environmentally but "cooler along the coast" is so true. Naturally air-conditioned. A seabreeze kicks in most afternoons with many evenings requiring a sweater. June can be beautiful or just fogged in most of the month. So much of the year is spent preparing for winter and cleaning up after winter. Winter snows are often mixed with freezing rain or ice. Keeps snow accumulations down but very unpleasant and not as easy to clean up as all Read More

Wholesome place - 5/6/2007
Eventhough Rockland serves as a service center for many outlying towns and has a walmart and a home depot, it feels relatively untouched by the homogenization occurring throughout the rest of the united Read More

Very poor economy here... - 9/27/2006
...in Rockland. It's difficult to do business in town where so many people are poor. There are not many white-collar jobs in the area, so most of the jobs here are service-related. Banks, Wal-Mart, and fast food joints would be the general places of employment. Lots of fishing and lobstering here, which doesn't exactly rake in the Read More

Not much in the way of public transportation.... - 9/27/2006
...at least not locally. We finally got a taxi company recently, but there are no local buses for around town -- you really need a vehicle. There is a Trailways station on the waterfront, though and we just got a train coming up here. Things in the transportation department are improving, but still not there yet as of Fall Read More

A little on the expensive side... - 9/27/2006
...in Rockland. Gas prices here were about 20 cents higher than my ex was reporting in Florida. Food seems more pricey here than in Massachusetts. I think it's because the trucks have to come so far -- Maine being way off in the upper right corner of the US and Read More

If you like the cold... - 9/27/2006
...then Rockland may be the place for you! It is freezing and snowy in the winter time. VERY nice in summer and fall, but the summer season lasts only about two and a half Read More
